February 2011 Newsletter: Occam's Hurdled Katana (New Podcast)
Hello All!
Welcome
to February’s newsletter! In particular, welcome to all the new subscribers! I
hope you enjoy these newsletters and find them useful to you in your training
and study.
The first bit of news is a new podcast called “Occam's Hurdled Katana”; which is my favourite title of all the podcasts we have ever done! The podcast looks at the three main approaches to kata from a purely logical perspective to determine which should be the favoured approach. This may be one of the more controversial podcasts we’ve done and I hope it gets everyone thinking (section 1).
A set of videos were recently added to the website that feature legendary street fighter Lenny McLean (AKA "The Guv'nor”). In the videos Lenny McLean shares his wisdom on combat and you even get to see a little bit of the man in action. Well worth a watch (section 3).
In section 2 you can find details of the Extreme Impact course I am running with Steve Williams. In section 4 you can find out about a forthcoming opportunity to become a “combat coach” with instruction from myself and Peter Consterdine 9th dan. Those wanting to know and teach all aspects of self-protection (not just to martial artists but commercially too) will be very interested in this (also open to those outside the UK). Finally, all details of my upcoming seminars can be found in section 11.
The main thing I’d like to express in this introduction is a HUGE thanks to all who have supported my son’s efforts to raise money for wounded veterans. As most will know, he had set himself the target of raising £1000 before he turned eight, but due to the generosity of you all he is now way over that! Rhys was overjoyed at the support given to him by “Dad’s karate friends”. It was not just the donations either. All the kind words of support and help spreading the word had him smiling from ear to ear! He and I are engaged in our training walks for his third event later this month (see section 9 for more details). He wants to write a thank you note to you all and I’ll include a scan of that in the next newsletter along with “”tales from the walk” :-) Thanks once again you wonderful people!
That will do for this introduction. Please checkout the contents list below and I hope you enjoy all that this month’s newsletter has to offer.
All the best,
Iain

1 - New Podcast: Occam's Hurdled Katana
This
month’s podcast is called “Occam's Hurdled Katana”; which is my favourite title
of all the podcasts we have ever done! In the podcast we look at the three most
prevalent approaches to kata (and kata application) and analyse them using a
logical principle called “Occam's Razor”. All historical and practical pros and
cons are temporarily put to one side as we look at things from a purely logical
perspective.
To be clear, I feel it is perfectly acceptable for anyone to choose to approach kata in whichever way they wish. That does not, however, mean that all approaches are equal. Some approaches are more functional and logical than others as neither property is “in the eye of the beholder”. If claims of validity are to be made, then they need to be backed up. With this in mind, the podcast looks at where the “burden of proof” lies when discussing which approach is to be the favoured one.
The final part of the podcast looks at how the discussion about which approach to kata is the right one needs to progress. I explain why it is up to those who hold to the weaker positions to prove themselves right. I also outline why some approaches have work to do if they are serious about engaging in the debate.
This may be one of the more controversial podcasts we’ve done and, regardless of the view you personally hold, I hope the podcast gets you thinking about the issues and how the discussion needs to move forward.
The podcast also includes Listeners Questions where we cover the integration of self-protection soft skills into karate training, high-kicking, classical and improvised weapons as they relate to kata, and how many kata should we practise.
It’s just under one hour of pugalistic-podgcasty-goodness and I hope you enjoy it!

3 - Lenny McLean on Street-Fighting (Videos)
Earlier
this month I added a few videos clips and interviews wit the legendary Lenny
McLean (AKA "The Guv'nor”). I was looking for the first one today as it makes
some very interesting points about the reality of conflict.
For those who remember (the clip is around 20 years old) this bit of footage was
part of a documentary following “the interviewer” (don’t know his name) in his
quest to become a name in the world of illegal fighting. As it turns out, he was
a fake and all the fights had been staged (which is pretty obvious when you see
them). He was rumbled half-way through filming when one of his opponents was
recognised as being one of his friends from earlier in the filming. Anyhow,
Lenny McLeanis real deal, even if the interviewer was not.
I recall an article on Lenny McLean in Fighting Arts International where the
writer suggested that had Lenny been born in Okinawa he would have been regarded
as a karate master. I can see that. There are some, who perhaps have an
unrealistic and idealised view of violence and a similar view of the old
masters, who would dispute that. However, I would say we need to look at things
from the perspective of ability and practicality.
Watch the clip and see how explosive and pragmatic everything is. Notice
the close range and how the limbs are controlled for the headbutts and bites.
It’s impressive stuff. Also notice that he makes reference to his poetry and (in
the following clips) there is a clear moral code that he operates to and he
ultimately feels violence is futile and detestable:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/lenny-mclean-street-fighting-video-interview
He comes across as a very nice guy (his book is well worth reading) and it has been said that a true martial artist is someone whose “smile can warm the hearts of little children and whose anger can make tigers cower in fear”. Lenny would seem to fit that criteria.
Here
are some of the key points to draw out of Lenny’s hard won wisdom:
1 – Being in good shape is vital.
2 – Real fights rarely last longer than 2 minutes
3 – You need to train hard
4 – Always be on your guard / aware
5 – You need to be extremely aggressive (“hate”).
6 – Concentrate on what you are doing and be proactive (“too busy going to work
yourself to worry about little bits of pain”)
7 – Fighting is not a good way to spend your life (in one of the clips below he
also says “I detest violence”).
I hope you enjoy watching the clips and it proves thought provoking about the
reality of violence and this very interesting man.
4 - Combat Coach Program with Iain Abernethy
This is just a quick “heads up” for something I’ll be announcing more details of very shortly. Those interested in understanding all the issues surrounding self-protection will be interested to hear about the World Combat Association’s Combat Coach program. 5 - Old Sombo Video
I’ve embedded an old Sombo video on the website. I’m sure most of you know that Sombo is a Russian weaponless martial art, combat sport and self-defence method that was formulated in the 1920s and draws its influence from indigenous fighting systems, judo, karate, boxing, jujutsu, freestyle wresting, and others. I really enjoy such old clips and comparing the methods used by various arts at various points of history. Be sure to notice the solo drilling of throws at 25 seconds in. I missed it first time around but it’s interesting to see “line-work” from a grappling perspective. Oschepkov (one of the founders of Sombo) is said to have taught karate so maybe it’s that influance? Or perhaps more likely the military style of training? Interesting either way and I hope you enjoy the video:

6 - Harbour View Martial Arts DVD Production
For
our DVDs we always want to ensure customers have the “wow!” factor when they
watch them. Times are hard and I want everyone who watches anything we do to
know that their hard-earned cash was well spent. And that we cared enough to
ensure that, not only was the DVD packed with useful information, but that the
DVD was professionally filmed and edited.
Too many martial artists cut corners and opt for the “my mate has a video
camera” approach to DVD production, and then wonder why they never get repeat
custom. If you want a professional product then you need to use professional
people.
Professional directors will ensure you can concentrate on what you do best while
they endure you come across as you should on camera and that everything is
recorded and outputted as it should be. Professional cameramen and soundmen will
ensure that your viewers get everything they need. Professional editors will
ensure that the end product is professional, enjoyable to watch and that viewers
get the “wow factor” from the first moment they press play.
I’ve worked with Louise Musgrave on many DVDs and her help has been invaluable.
Louise makes the whole process very straightforward and is meticulous about
ensuring a high quality product. I really like her too and she always make the
process lots of fun (see the outtakes at the end of Beyond Bunkai for some
examples of that!).
If you are looking to make a DVD to share what you do with lots of people, or
even an in-house syllabus DVD for your students, and you don’t know where to
start, all you need do is contact Louise at Harbour View Productions

7 - Iain teaching in Kansas City, Missouri, USA
As
I mentioned in the last newsletter, on
the 7th, 8th and 9th of October I may be teaching in Kansas City, Missouri metro
area, specifically at Blue River Community College in Independence, Missouri! I
enjoyed my time in the USA last year and am keen to get back over and spend a
little more time swapping ideas and shooting the breeze with all the fiends I’ve
made via these newsletters and the website.
We’re looking at the feasibility of a three day event to cover the following:
The Historical Development and Background of Kata
The 4 Stage Approach to Kata
The Language of Kata
How to Analyse the Movements of Kata
The Nature of Live Conflict
How to Create Effective Bunkai Drills
Karate Grappling (including throws, locks, chokes, strangles and groundwork).
Bunkai-Based Flow Drills
Kata-Based-Sparring (live bunkai drills and how to make them appropriate for all
levels)
Kata Applications including The Pinan / Heian Series, Tekki / Naihanchi,
Kushanku / Kanku-Dai, Passai / Bassai-Dai
The aim is to ensure that all participants can take the elements of what I teach
which fit with their existing approach so they can add them to their training
and teaching.

8 - Neil Cook Bunkai course in Norfolk (2nd of April)
On the
Saturday 2nd April Neil Cook will be running an applied karate / kata bunkai
seminar from 10:00am - 12:00am. Max 30 people, £10 per person if payment is
received before Monday 28th March, £12 on day. Cheques to 'Dereham Martial
Arts'. Please give phone number or email address so payment can be acknowledged.
No students under 14yrs old.
The seminar address and place to send payment to is: Dereham martial arts
academy, 32b Bertie ward way, Rashes green ind est, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 1TE.
You can also call Neil on 07835 802394.
The seminar will covers the main “blocks” used within most karate systems: Head
block, Knife hand block, Groin Block, Inside/Outside block. The main focus is to
show how these techniques can be used an offensive tool in relation to self
defence, rather than karate-ka vs karate-ka, either as a stand alone technique
or linked with other moves found within Pinan/Heian, Bassai Dai and Tekki Shodan
kata. We'll also look and the “stances” the blocks are performed in and how they
are related.
Neil’s Background: “I started karate in 1998 competing in regional and
national competitions under the EKKA. I received my Shodan under Mick Blackwell
in 2004, then my Nidan 2006. I spent a year studying martial arts in Biejing
covering Sanda, Wrestling and a little Thai Boxing. Obtained a Shodan in
kickboxing in 2008 once again under Mick Blackwell, with experience in semi
contact and full contact competitions. Studied Kuk Sool Won for three years,
worked on the doors for six months and most recently passed Iain Abernethy's
Instructor Award. I'm also really nice.”
What Iain says: “Neil is one of a very small number of people to complete
my instructor program. His knowledge of the practical application of kata is
first rate. Neil moves very well and that combined with his clear and friendly
teaching style means he is able to inspire and educate anyone with a sincere
interest in karate as a functional combative system.”
9 - Support Rhys Abernethy's "Help for Heroes"
A huge thanks to all of you who so kindly supported Rhys! He’s overjoyed to have achieved his target (and then some!) and he and I are currently doing quite a bit of walking as training for the big walk later this month! We’ll be sure to keep you informed as things progress. Thanks once again to all for their support! You’re all great!
If you are not sure what this is all about, you can find out more below:
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/news/rhys-abernethy-iains-7-year-old-son-would-your-help-help-heroes
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Rhys (my middle child aged 7) is trying to raise at least £1000 for Help for Heroes before he turns 8 in a few months. So far he has done a 1 mile swim and braved the extremely cold Solway Firth on new-year’s day. At the time of writing he has raised just over £700 and the next event is a walk from our house to his maternal grandmothers (14 miles) on the 27th of February.
All the details (photos, video etc) can be seen via the above page and there are also links on that page for those who want to donate online.
All of this is Rhys’s own idea and I’m really proud of him for setting such goals and then pushing himself to reach them. Any help you can give him to reach his goal, in whatever form will be hugely appreciated by both Rhys and myself. Posting the link on forums, emailing the details to your lists, donating a pound or two, etc will all mount up and everything you can do will be really appreciated by Rhys and the wounded soldiers he has committed himself to helping.

martial arts and street conflict situation.
With this 1 day class limited to just 20 people, there will be a substantial
opportunity to learn this dynamic impact development system, originally
developed by Sensei Shigeru Kimura of Shukokai Karate fame - my great
inspiration in respect of understanding and applying the most effective dynamics
to not only the development of impact, but movement, transitions between
techniques and speed.
The ‘foundation’ techniques were originally developed by Kimura with scientific
assistance from a Japanese university and included within the core Shukokai
Karate system.
Over the years, however, I have refined these core dynamics to be devastatingly
effective, not only in traditional Karate, but in a Full Contact/ MMA
environment and particularly for ‘Preemptive‘ striking in real life violent
encounters and as taught to numerous UK police forces, including Firearms/Close
Protection units. Punching, slaps, elbow, combinations and delivery at speed
will all be covered and more. You can fit these dynamics within your core
martial arts to give real effect.
