1) LOCKDOWN LISTENING: For the rest of this month I will share a podcast from the archives every other day. Some selected listening on various aspects of karate and self-protection! A month of martial education! I hope you’ll enjoy the mix of the historical, practical, educational and entertaining! See Facebook or Twitter every other day at 4PM UK time / 5 PM CEST / 11am US Eastern (starts today!).

2) THE NEXT LIVE BROADCAST: This Saturday we will go live on Facebook to discuss “Kata and its relationship to live practise”. While many see kata and sparring as being antithetical, they are in fact two related practises that are supposed to support and inform one another! In this live broadcast from the Bunkai Bunker (my shed) I will explain the process from an historical and functional perspective, and then answer any questions you may have! We go live on Facebook on Saturday (the 4th) at 4PM UK time / 5 PM CEST / 11am US Eastern! See you there! https://www.facebook.com/iainabernethy

3) APP UPDATES: I’ve added three new videos to the app this week!
A) UNSU IN-DEPTH PART 11
We continue our in-depth look at Unsu by exploring throwing principles and the infamous jump! Parts 11 and 12 will show how the jump can be used to throw the enemy over your hips and then use a knee drop to finish!
New Video 1: Kata Bunkai > Unsu > Unsu In-Depth > Part 11
B) CREATE YOUR OWN KATA!
If you’re on lockdown, using the time to create your own kata can be a very worthwhile project! It’s not about creating a kata with a view to it being an ongoing part of your practise. It’s more about gaining insights into the nature of the traditional kata through the exercise. This video explains how.
New Video 2: Misc Techniques and Drills > Solo Training Ideas > Solo Training > Create Your Own Kata!
C) A BLOCK IS A BLOW IS A LOCK IS A THROW?
“A block is a blow is a lock is a throw” is a common phrase withing some sections of the karate community, but I don’t like it and I don’t believe it to be accurate. In this video, I break down the phrase and explain why I don’t care for it.
New Video 3: Core Concepts > Iain Discusses 4 > A block is a blow is a lock is a throw?
If you are not an app member, please email app@iainabernethy.com and we will get you set up with a free trail account! :-)
