July 2010 Newsletter:

New longest ever podcast (what a black belt should be) and loads of other cool stuff!

Hi All,

Blitz Cover / Link to new podcastWelcome to July’s newsletter! We’ve had a lot of new people join us since the last newsletter so I’d like to extend a special welcome to our “newbies” and to thank our existing members for so effectively spreading the word!

This month sees our longest podcast ever (45 mins)! Having discussed many of the issues surrounding the black belt and the grading system in June’s podcast, I got a lot of emails from people asking about how I personally structure my syllabus and what I think a black belt should be. I therefore picked up my syllabus, hit record, and the resulting stream of consciousness is this month’s podcast! It’s a wide ranging podcast that covers many aspects of the martial arts and I hope it proves useful to you all. See section 1 for details on how to listen to the podcast online or download it to your computer or MP3 player.

This month also sees the final countdown to X-Po! See section 3 for details and be sure to act NOW to ensure you can be part of this one of a kind history making event!

This newsletter also has details of my new “Beyond Bunkai” DVD that will be filmed in a couple of week’s time; information on the new and expanded edition of “Shotokan’s Secret”; Chris Denwood’s new DVD; and loads of other updates!

I’ll also be in touch between now and the next newsletter to let you know about the launch of the new and improved website (see section 7); the first series of drills being added to the Extreme Impact You-Tube Channel; the launch of Jissen 7; and some extra information as we countdown to X-Po! So loads of exciting stuff happening!

Please check out the contents list below and see what is of interest!

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

PS A SATMA update will be sent to all on the list shortly!

1 - New Podcast: What A Black Belt Should Be (as Iain sees it!) - Longest Podcast Ever!

What A Black Belt Should Be (as Iain sees it!)Welcome to the longest podcast we have ever done! This month’s podcast follows on from last month’s on the grading system and the black belt. I received a lot of requests for more information on what I felt a syllabus should include and what a dan grade should be. So I picked up a copy of my syllabus and clicked the record icon on my laptop. The resulting “stream of consciousness” is this month’s podcast.

The podcast is split into two halves. In the first half, I discuss the topics that I feel a holistic and pragmatic syllabus should include and why they are so important. I think it would be fair to say that the majority of martial arts syllabuses omit these things so I hope it provides some food for thought. The second part of the podcast discusses how my personal syllabus (which I keep private) is set up and the podcast also breaks down what we do for 9th kyu and 1st dan; and a little bit of what we cover as students make their way from one to the other.

As I hope I made clear last month, I personally don’t believe that a universal and standardised criteria for dan grades is a good idea (listen to the podcast for the details of why I think that). So in that vein, I am not suggesting that what I do is what others must also do; nor am I suggesting that all syllabuses adopt the criteria I personally use. I do, however, hope that this discussion on what I personally do is helpful to you in structuring what you do.

I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with a standard length podcast next month!

2 - Iain Abernethy Blitz Magazine Interview

Blitz CoverWhen in Australia earlier this year I was interviewed by Blitz magazine. It was an enjoyable interview in which I was asked about my early days in karate, my views on the value of kata without bunkai, style purity, how karate lost its focus on application, the development of new systems, reality based training, no first attack in karate, and more! That interview features in this month’s issue!

We also did a fun photo-shoot which involved the ever patient Craig getting punched, kicked, locked and grappled. Craig did a great job of “uke-ing” and we got some really good pictures to accompany the interview. We also took some pictures recording some fitness and technical drills that I make use of and they will appear in future issues.

Thanks to Robert Auricchio for making the interview happen; Ben Stone for conducting the interview; Charlie Suriano for taking all the photos; and Craig Stuart for posing for all the pictures. All very much appreciated!

I hope all our Australian members enjoy the interview!

3 - "Crossing the Pond!": The Countdown begins!

(including preview videos)

Crossing the Pond Information! It recent newsletters I've been telling you about "Crossing the Pond" which is an amazing training opportunity in August for those on either side of the Atlantic! Well we are now just weeks away and time is running out to book your place at this one of a kind training opportunity!

The European event has people travelling from as far away as Spain and Norway! The USA event also has people travelling from all over the states! This truly is a not to be missed event.

The first event will take place in Seattle in the USA (14th and 15th of August) and the second event will take place a week later in Coventry in the UK (21st and 22nd of August).

This seminar is open to all adult martial artists - regardless of background, style and level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by the instructors - will be issued to all participants.

Nicholas Yang - Chinese Long Fist and White Crane

Al Peasland - Real world self-protection

Iain Abernethy - Close-Range combat / Applications of kata

Marc “Animal” MacYoung - knife, gangs, guns and jail

Kris Wilder - Okinawan structure, power, and mind set

I’m thrilled to be able to meet up with members and visitors from the USA as well having the opportunity to teach as part of such an amazing line up! I have to say this is an amazing mix of the “traditional” and the “reality based” (not that I see a difference between the two terms) and I’m sure serious martial artists in both the UK and USA will be very keen to be part of this history making event!

4 - New Iain Abernethy "Beyond Bunkai" DVD to be filmed very soon!

In two weeks time we’ll be filming a brand new DVD on a wide-ranging and holistic Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan semi-live flow drill! I have taught basic versions of this drill at the seminars and this DVD goes one step further to show the drill in its entirety!

Where this drill differs from more common flow drills is that it is not “scripted” and will vary depending upon the defensive actions of “uke”, as “tori” uses all the motions from the kata to dominate and to flow around all attempts to stop their strikes.

The entire drill is conducted at close-range and includes strikes, traps, head-butts, bites, gouges, clinches, escapes, stamps, locks, takedowns, chokes, strangles and more. This single drill also makes use of every motion in the enquire kata and is theoretically infinite in the variations that will emerge in practise.

The DVD has the working title of “Beyond Bunkai” and it will have been filmed by the time the next newsletter goes out. High quality DVDs do take time to edit and produce so it is unlikely the DVD will be ready before the end of 2010. I’ll be sure to keep you informed as things progress though as I’m confident this will become our most popular DVD; especially with more advanced bunkai practitioners.

I also feel this drill will find its way on to many of your teaching syllabuses in much the same way that the Pinan / Heian drills shown in “The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System” DVDs have.

All very exiting and please watch this space for updates as things progress!

5 - New Edition of "Shotokan's Secret" by Bruce Clayton

Shotokans SecretI love books that make you think and include fascinating, new ways of looking at the old. Shotokan’s Secret is definitely one of those books! The great news is that a new and significantly expanded edition was recently released!

Shotokan’s secret is an incredibly well written book that is a true “page turner”. I really liked the original edition and this new expanded edition has a lot of new material and is also a must read; even for those who have the original. Whether you agree with the ultimate conclusion of the book or not, what is beyond doubt is that Bruce Clayton presents his case is a very engaging way, the book will really get you thinking about your kata, and reading it will definitely add a new dimension to your understanding of kata, bunkai and the development of karate. One of my favourite martial arts books of recent times!

Book Description:

Beginning with a thorough historical analysis of its 19th-century origins, the lore behind the art of Shotokan karate is dissected in this revised handbook. Describing how this style was invented by the world’s only unarmed bodyguards in Okinawa, this account depicts the impossible odds these men endured in order to protect their king and avoid a costly bloodbath. Featuring five chapters of new material and a striking array of illustrations depicting the Heian katas, this overview demonstrates how each kata contains a precise lesson outlining the necessary skills to meet a specific threat. Going beyond the bare-handed application and revealing a more innovative, holistic approach to an ancient style of self-defense, this reference is ideal for martial arts historians and practitioners alike.

About the Author:

Bruce D. Clayton, PhD, has studied the art of karate since 1973. He holds a seventh-degree black belt in Shotokan karate and he is the creator of Jein Do, a self-defense course for young women. He is the author of the Black Medicine series, Fallout Survival, Life After Doomsday, Life After Terrorism, and Thinking About Survival. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, the CBS Evening News, Today, and the Tomorrow Show. He lives in Yosemite, California.

6 - Acorns to Oak Trees: Essential Guidelines for Pragmatic Kata Bunkai

(New DVD from Chris Denwood)

Hi All,

Chris Denwood DVDIain has very kindly given me some space in his newsletter to let you know about my brand new double disc instructional DVD set entitled 'Acorns to Oak Trees: Essential Guidelines for Pragmatic Kata Bunkai'.

As the name suggests, the DVD essentially shares five core rules and associated guidelines that I use in my own dojo to help express the combative applications held within the movements of traditional karate kata.

In order to act as a useful resource tool, I took the decision to align the content of the DVD to the guidelines themselves, rather than simply providing a collection of applications for 'applications sake'. Hopefully in this way (and if my plan has worked) viewers of all levels of experience should be able to take the lessons away and freely incorporate them into any style or system whilst maintaining and developing their own personal interpretation of the art. The DVD still does of course provide plenty of applications to work through, supporting my main objective to produce a thought-provoking guide to the over-arching strategy and methodology of traditional pragmatic karate.

The total running time is 120 minutes, with a couple of bonus features thrown in including 'An Introduction to Kettlebell Lifting for Traditional Hojo Undo'. Those who have trained with me in the past will know that I consider the use of the kettlebell extremely beneficial for all martial artists and this special feature provides a short introduction as to why this tool is so effective specifically with respect to enhancing those physical attributes associated with the application of karate kata.

The cost of the two-disc DVD set is only £24.99 and copies can be ordered direct from www.eskk.co.uk or www.chrisdenwood.com or simply by clicking the link below:

http://www.eskk-shop.co.uk/new-dvd.html

I really hope you enjoy the DVD. I had a great time producing it and if it manages to provide some assistance to at least one person along the ‘bunkai journey' then it's been a very worthwhile project indeed!

Best wishes,

Chris Denwood.

7 - New and Improved Website Update!

As I mentioned last month, the whole iainabernethy.com website is about to undergo a major update! There is quite a bit of extra functionality that will be added to the website and I feel sure regular visitors and users will greatly enjoy what we have in store.

I had hoped to get the new version of the site live in time for this newsletter. My busy schedule got in the way however and it will now be another couple of weeks before we roll the new site out.

The updated website will offer things the current website cannot (networking facilities, good quality streamed video, exclusive content, greater interaction with users etc). The changes are also needed to be able to provide the service I want for SATMA. Everything we already have (podcasts, newsletters, forum, articles, etc) will the there (in a new and improved way) and we'll have load more besides.

The video facilities are something I am particularly looking forward to making use of by brining you regular instructional video-casts.

One thing I think you'll also all like is that the forum, pod-casts, videos, articles and the rest of the site will be accessible from a single search function. This should make the site very easy to interrogate the website no matter which martial aspect you are researching. The way the new site is structured means we will be able to bring you new information on a more regular basis too!

Watch this space for news when we go live with Iain Abernethy.com 2.0!

8 - Extreme Impact You-Tube Channel Update

Extreme Impact PageThe first batch of free drills will be added to the channel very soon! We have a number ready to roll out and our aim is to add the drills at a rate of at least one a week for the first few weeks! We'll seed out a special announcement as soon as we go live! If you missed the earlier announcements, more information can be found below:

I recently announced that Steve Williams and I were going to be bringing you regular training tips and drills via you-tube! The first few special drills have now been filmed and have been edited. As soon as they are live, you can be sure that we will let you know! The idea is that once a month (minimum) we’ll record some material that will show a drill to develop a particular martial attribute! The channel has been set up and the new clips will be added in the not too distant future!

http://www.youtube.com/user/extremeimpactma

As I also mentioned in previous newsletters, Steve and I have now also filmed another 5 Extreme Impact units! We covered Advanced Fitness and Muscular Endurance Drills; Angled Knockouts: Hooks and Uppercuts; Confusion Drills; Footwork – Dynamic Striking on the move; and Bag Drills – Training Alone! (the bag work drills being a favourite of mine).

They are now on their final edits and we hope to have them available soon! Thanks to everyone who has purchased the first five units as 100% of the money generated has gone into the production of units 6 to 10. Making such programmes is expensive and very time consuming and we could not have done it without your support.

We've also had lots of requests relating to the Extreme Impact T-Shirts worn by Steve and I in the filming. Well the good news is that we have got a firm to produce the shirt and we'll also let you know about that in future newsletters.

For more details of Units 1 to 5 please visit this webpage: http://www.iainabernethy.com/videos/Extreme_Impact.asp

9 - Jissen 7 Update

The 7th issue of Jissen – the free online practical martial arts magazine - is now completed and will be sent to the distributors next week. All Jissen subscribers (and subscribers to this newsletter too) will then be informed as soon as the magazine is available for download! So not long to wait now! In the meantime, please enjoy reading through all the back issues: www.jissenmag.com

10 - Upcoming Iain Abernethy Seminars!

Below you can find details of my upcoming open seminars for the next 6 months. I look forward to seeing you at the next event in your part of the world!

As you can see 2010 is now fully booked and dates for 2011 are filling up. This year I have dropped the number of dates available for seminars by around one-third. Next year I intend to drop the number of available dates still further because, as much as I enjoy the seminars, there is now simply too much demand for me to meet and I need the time to do other things. I really do hate to disappoint people, so if you do want me to visit you in 2011, you need to be thinking about that sooner rather than later.

Please don't hesitate to contact me (iain@iainabernethy.com) should you have any questions on any of the upcoming events below!
