Merry Christmas! / Jissen 6 Available now

Hi All,

Jissen Issue 6I’d like to kick things off by wishing members old and new a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, Joyous Winter Solstice, Saturnalia, Omisoka, etc! In short, whatever you celebrate at this time of year … I hope you have a great one!

This isn’t really a newsletter, just a quick note to wish you all the best for the festive season and to let you know that issue 6 of Jissen: the free online practical martial arts magazine is now available for download! (See Section 1). It’s our biggest issue yet and I hope you enjoy it! Please also check out the great video that goes with the article “Flow in Modern Karate by Nikolaj Fænø Skarbye” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwFjVKnOQDg)

This quick note also includes details of all of the open seminars in the first half of 2010! I’ll be teaching in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Canada and Australia! I’ll then be having a break from travelling through the summer – with one notable exception (US members, watch this space!) – and the last three months of the year are already filling up quickly. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I am reducing the number of seminars I am conducting this year (by around 1/3) so less dates are being made available. If you do want me to visit your dojo in 2010, please get in touch ASAP.

The other bit of important news is that the Extreme Impact downloads should be available in the next couple of weeks! I will be getting the final edits this week and then it’s just a matter of getting them uploaded to the site. I hope you all enjoy them and I’ve included the details in section 5.

So that’s it for the introduction to this quick update. I’ll be back with a full newsletter (and new podcast) in a week or so.

Thank you to you all for your support in 2009! I really appreciate it and I'm sure your kindness towards me will help get you on Santa's nice list! :-)

Have a good one!,

Iain

"Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!"

1 – Jissen Six Available for Download!

Jissen Issue 6The sixth issue of Jissen is now ready for download! The Jissen Subscribers were informed a week or so ago, and if you want to know as soon as the latest issue is ready please visit www.jissenmag.com and sign up there.

I’d like to begin by apologising for the delay in getting this issue out. I’ve been so busy over the last few months that it became obvious that I was not going to get this issue finished on time.

Helen (my wife) picked up the slack and this added in another slight delay while she got familiarised with all the typesetting software. When you see the magazine, I think you’ll agree Helen as done a great job and the good thing is that the magazine is no longer entirely reliant on me for progress. The 7th issue is already being put together. I am therefore sorry for this delay, but the good news is all future magazines should be as regular as clockwork.

If you have a look at the contents list below, you can see that this issue has been well worth the wait! We have a great interview with Dave Turton, an article by world renowned realist Geoff Thompson (with more to come from Geoff in future issues) and articles on a whole host of subjects including multiple opponents, improvised weapons, kata application, flow drills, ancient European fighting arts and even how to fight a horse (kind of)!

I hope you enjoy this latest issue, and please visit www.jissenmag.com to download Jissen Issue 6!

You can also downloads the magazine from: http://www.iainabernethy.com/Jissen_Magazine.asp

3 - “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar!

I am pleased to invite you to “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar day on Sunday 28th February 2010 at Bristol Dojo. 11am-5pm

Combat does not adhere to any given style or martial discipline, whilst techniques may look very different on the surface; they often share the same core principles. Whether you’re standing and striking or grappling on the ground the same principles can be used, the only thing that changes is how they are applied.

“Reality Check” brings two of the most sought after UK seminar instructors together for the first time on one course covering the complete combat subject of Stand-up and Ground fighting principles:-

Iain Abernethy – 5th Dan Karate Jutsu. One of the UK’s leading exponents of applied combat, Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts. At Reality Check Iain will be covering striking principles from the standing position. www.iainabernethy.com

Kevin O’Hagan – 7th Dan Combat Jujutsu. Kevin has taught successfully on the UK seminar circuit for many years and is held in high regard for not only his dynamic techniques and high level of fitness, but also for his down to earth realistic teaching. Kevin has written 5 books to date on Martial Arts. He has appeared on radio and TV promoting his art and as a Self Defence Specialist and he has written for fighters magazine regularly for 8 years. His TV credits include "Muscle" a documentary following a team of Bristol Door Security shown on BBC1 and most recently he appeared on a Sky 1 TV show "Britain’s Hardest." Kevin will be teaching principles relating to ground fighting. www.kevinohagan.com

The seminar will take combat principles and show how they can be applied from a standing position with Iain and then how they can be applied on the ground with Kevin including all the throws, locks, chokes and strangles you would expect from these two gentlemen. This is an open seminar and anyone who trains in any martial art is welcome.

Whether you train Karate, Jujutsu, MMA, Thai Boxing, Tae Kwon Do or Judo, this course will help you learn common combat principles to help you develop in your chosen system. No formal training wear is required, wear what’s comfortable for you!

The cost of this full 6 hour seminar is just £30 per person and the remaining places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place please send payment made out to Bristol Dojo Ltd, to 14 Marjoram Way, Village Quarter. Portishead. BS20 7JF. Details on the venue can be found here www.bristoldojo.com

5 - Extreme Impact with Iain Abernethy & Steve Williams

eXtreme Impact"I fall to the floor. I’m breathing so hard that my lungs feel like they are about to burst. I look down at my broken body. I can hear nothing but the sound of my pounding heart. I have a splitting headache as my brain screams for oxygen. My muscles are so exhausted that my body can no longer move. So it doesn’t. Mentally and physically I have nothing left. This is hell. And then it starts; like it always does: “Get up! Get a grip of yourself and get on your feet!” The inner voice. My will. My sprit. It’s the one thing that will never lie down and die. So I get to my feet and I do it all again. This is how I train. This is INTENSITY."

In recent newsletters I've been telling you all about the project that Steve Williams and I have been working on called "Extreme Impact". Extreme Impact is a training system that reflects the drills that myself and Steve use to develop power, technique, anaerobic fitness, speed and explosiveness. We recently filmed five units which cover drills to develop all aspects of the following techniques:

  • Extreme Impact Unit 1 - Developing a Knockout Jab!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 2 - The Cross: The Ultimate Knockout Shot!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 3 - Roundhouse: The King of Kicks!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 4 - Front and Side Kicks: Straight Down the Line!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 5 - Strength & Plyometric Drills: Not for the Fainthearted!

These units will be available exclusively as downloads in coming weeks. Steve and I have now seen the edits of most of the programmes and we are delighted with how they are looking. All going well we will have the downloads (and some free previews) available very soon.

If you are a martial artist who wants to train in a way that will separate you from the crowd, I think this training system will be of great interest to you. Regardless of whether you are a "traditionalist" like myself, or a "modernist" like Steve, we feel sure this training system will be of great interest to you. Please watch this space for details as things develop!

One Important Note: EVERYTHING you see on these downloads was recorded live and no camera tricks were used! We give you our word that on all of the live demonstrations nothing was speeded up, no sound effects were added, and neither of us are "hamming things up" for the camera. The speed and impact is 100% genuine and martial artists were harmed in the filming of these programmes ;-)

6 - Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot 2010 Weekend Seminar!

The 4th annual Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot seminar will be held over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of May 2010! As with previous weekends, attendees will be taken through a whole mix of striking, grappling and ground-work techniques, strategies and training methods. We will also be covering plenty of kata bunkai and short lectures / presentations on various aspects of training, self-protection and combat.

Mike and I always make sure each weekend seminar is unique and we are currently finalising the plan for the weekend. It is not yet possible to book your place, and I am giving you the date now so you can get it in your diary. I’ll be sure to let you know when it is possible to book your place and when further details are available.

Previous years have been very well attended and great fun! The training will again take place at the hugely impressive Kendal Judo Centre (a 2012 Pre-Olympic Training Venue). It’s a beautiful part of the world and attendees may well want to make use of the fact it is a bank holiday weekend to take a little time to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area.

Watch this space for more details!

7 - Iain Abernethy in Australia in March 2010!

Australian FlagA PDF is now available for download from my website that includes all the details of my seminars in Australia in March 2010! The PDF also contains a booking form so you can secure your places. Please follow the link below to download the PDF:

http://www.iainabernethy.com/documents/Iain_Aber_Registration_Aus_2010.pdf

As you can see from the PDF, we will be covering a wide range of topics throughout the week! As is the case with all the seminars I do, my intention is to openly share my thoughts on applied karate and kata application in the hope that you will find aspects of my approach useful to you in your own training and teaching.

I’ve planned all the seminars to stand on their own as well as ensuring they all come together to give a very thorough overview of my approach to kata application for all those people who are attending all the events. A lot of interest has been shown in these seminars so please get in touch with the hosts as quickly as you can in order to secure your place.

The PDF has all the contact details for the hosts if you have any questions relating to the organisation of the seminars. If you have a question on what we will be covering at the seminars, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line at iain@iainabernethy.com and I’ll get back to you as quickly as I can. Please also be sure to check out the offer of accommodation below.

I’m really looking forward to my first trip to Australia and what I’m sure will be a fun and productive week!
