January 2011 Newsletter: The Martial Map (free audio book),
Extreme Impact Instructor's Course & Rhys Abernethy wants your help!
Hello All!
I hope things are good with you and that 2011 is treating you well? We had a great Christmas ... but I kept busy over the holiday period too! I have recorded a free audio book for you all called “The Martial Map” (see section 1). I wanted to start 2011 with something special and I have to confess to being quite proud of this offering. All for the usual price of free and I hope you enjoy it.
You also have the opportunity to do some good in this newsletter through helping my 7 year old son to help wounded soldiers (see section 2) and by helping a good man in Uganda keep a roof over his head … and getting a cool t-shirt into the bargain too (see section 5)!
Those looking to do something a bit special to further their martial arts in 2011 will also be interested in the Extreme Impact Instructors course that myself and Steve Williams 5th can BCA will be running in the near future (see section 4).
I may also be in Kansas City, Missouri, USA in October! More information can be found on that in section 7.
This newsletter also has information on some DVDs that may be of interest (sections 3, 10 and 24) and plenty of great training opportunities (sections 4, 13, 14. 19, 20, 21 & 22).
We also have some interesting information on Jigen-Ryu swordsmanship and its relationship to karate, some video of karate throws, and plenty more that I hope you’ll find interesting!
I hope you enjoy all we have to offer this month and I’ll be back with more in February’s newsletter!
All the best,
Iain

1 - New Podcast: The Martial Map Audio Book
I
wanted to start the year with something a little special, so here is a free
“audio book” (i.e. a long podcast! :-) called “The Martial Map”.
In the audio book I look at martial arts, fighting, self-protection and their
relationship to one another. Many martial arts instructors see martial arts,
fighting and self-protection as being one and the same with all distinctions
between them being completely lost. Personally I think this lack of clarity to
be highly problematic and it is arguably the biggest problem we face today.
We train most effectively when we clearly define the objective of that training.
However, it is my view that most practitioners and instructors are unclear what
they are training for. That uncertainty leads to ineffective and unfocused
training.
In the audio book I put forward a simple model to help refocus people on the
distinctions and similarities between various areas of study. It is my view that
this will lead to more efficient training. As you may have guessed, I call this
model “The Martial Map”.
The Martial Map is not the definitive solution to the problem of unfocused
training (and there are other solutions too), but I think The Martial Map is a
very useful way of framing the question. I firmly believe that those who apply
this way of thinking to their training will become better fighters, better
martial artists and better able to protect themselves from society’s violent
minority.
The Martial Map will also be useful for instructors by helping to ensure their
teaching is objective driven, their students remain clear on the purpose of all
forms of training, and there is no confusion on when any given method is
applicable and when it is not.
The Martial Map is around 1 hour long (10,000 words approx) and I hope you find
it a thought provoking and enjoyable listen.
All the best,
Iain
PS Thanks to all on the forum and elsewhere who have helped me to clarify the
thinking upon which The Martial Map is based.

2 - Support Rhys Abernethy's "Help for Heroes"
I’d
really appreciate it if you could have a quick look at the web page below:
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/news/rhys-abernethy-iains-7-year-old-son-would-your-help-help-heroes
Rhys (my middle child aged 7) is trying to raise at least £1000 for Help for Heroes before he turns 8 in a few months. So far he has done a 1 mile swim and braved the extremely cold Solway Firth on new-year’s day. At the time of writing he has raised just over £700 and the next event is a walk from our house to his maternal grandmothers (14 miles) on the 27th of February.
All the details (photos, video etc) can be seen via the above page and there are also links on that page for those who want to donate online.
All of this is Rhys’s own idea and I’m really proud of him for setting such goals and then pushing himself to reach them. Any help you can give him to reach his goal, in whatever form will be hugely appreciated by both Rhys and myself. Posting the link on forums, emailing the details to your lists, donating a pound or two, etc will all mount up and everything you can do will be really appreciated by Rhys and the wounded soldiers he has committed himself to helping.
Many thanks!
Iain
PS Rhys was interviewed by “Tim” for the British Forces Broadcasting Service this week. That interview will air this Sunday (16th of Jan) at breakfast (around 9:30ish we were told). Those in the UK with satellite TV can listen to it on channel 0211.
3 - Beyond Bunkai DVD Update
Update:
The new Beyond Bunkai DVD is off to a really
great start and I’d like to express my thanks to
everyone who has purchased it. The feedback has been
really good and I’m really pleased so many of you
are taking the drills and making them part of what
you do. Work has started on download version and all
going well that will be available in 5 or 6 weeks.
When we have the footage from that, I’ll put a few
sample clips online.
DVD Details: This DVD presents a unique non-scripted flow drill
that includes all the motions found within Naihanchi
/ Tekki Shodan. Ideal for the more experienced
bunkai practitioner, and essentially infinite in its
variations, this drill shows the depth of Naihanchi
/ Tekki Shodan and includes gripping skills,
head-butting, biting, gouging, seizing, locking,
controlling limbs, chokes, cranks, takedowns and
close-range kicking.
This drill is also unlike most flow drills in that
it is not carefully scripted nor does it involve
giving up a position of advantage so your partner
can have their turn. The drill instead enables the
practitioner to dominate at close-range, flow past
any obstructions the enemy may present, safely
escape, and practise applying the bunkai of the kata
in a realistic context. This DVD also includes a
breakdown of the kata itself and a discussion on the
history of Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan.
Iain Abernethy is one of the world’s leading
exponents of kata application and practical karate.
He has been invited all over the globe to teach his
approach and to help people return to the original
combative nature of the traditional martial arts.
Please follow this link to purchase online: http://shop.iainabernethy.com/acatalog/DVDs_UK.html
Both PAL & NTSC versions (suitable for all regions) are available! You will automatically be sent the right format for your country.
This new DVD costs just £24.99 (including UK shipping). Rest of Europe +£1.50 / Rest of the World +£2.50
Note: This DVD is not available as a download at this time. The download version is expected to be available in the spring of 2011.

5 - "Ask Me About My Bruises" T-Shirts (for a good cause)
We
all like cool martial arts t-shirts and I have to say that one of my favourites
is my “Ask me about my bruises” shirt that I got from Eric Parsons while in the
US last year. Not only does it look cool and is quite witty, but I’ve made new
friends and even got new students when total strangers have asked me about my
bruises!
My favourite was when flying out of Germany one time and I was asked by a border
guard, who was inspecting my passport at the time, “tell about your bruises?”
I’d forgotten I had the shirt on and hence thought that my passport photo must
have some facial bruises that I’d not noticed before! He had a good laugh at me
while I worked it out! Another new friend made :-)
Anyhow, bottom line is that you need one of these shirts! The cool thing is that
in getting one you’re also helping out a very needy guy. I’ll let Eric explain
all that in the note below. Read the stuff below, contact Eric, do a cool thing,
look cool in a cool shirt and make new friends!
All the best,
Iain
Message from Eric Parsons
Hello Everyone,
While serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uganda, I founded a martial arts
group which Sarah (my wife) and I eventually incorporated into an anti-HIV/AIDS
life skills training program. The top student in that group, Felex Forward, has
continued to train in the martial arts and is also currently working as a
primary school teacher in the country, under which capacity he is trying to
continue the joint life skills/martial arts program. However, last month, Felex
was told by the local government that they were going to demolish his house
because the town had recently been promoted to a district capital and they
wanted to "beautify" the neighborhood. As such, he is in dire need of
assistance.
To help out, we are selling our popular "Ask me about my bruises" shirts as a
fundraiser. With the help of a talented artist, we've came up with a very cool
design, but you don't need to take my word for it. Check it out for yourself!
Shirts are $20 for US orders and $23 for international orders, postage included,
and can be paid either via check or through Paypal. If you're interested in
purchasing a shirt and helping Felex out, just contact me at
askmeaboutmybruises@gmail.com
Thanks in advance!
Eric

6 - Extreme Impact T-Shirts!
Since
Steve Williams and I first wore the Extreme Impact T-Shirts in the first five
Extreme Impact units, people have been asking if they can buy the shirts. As it
was, there were only two in existence and those were the ones Steve and I had
specially made for the filming. However, with so many people asking, we decided
to get some made!
Never ones to do things by half, we contacted Randori Fight-Wear and worked with
them to make a high quality shirt. Indeed, we are looking to do a full range of
equipment (gloves, shorts, hoodies, etc) in the longer term. Anyhow, if you were
one of the people who’d like their own Extreme Impact T-Shirt, please follow the
link below:
http://shop.iainabernethy.com/acatalog/T-Shirts_Clothing.html
T-Shirt Info: This high quality heavy
jersey 100% cotton Extreme Impact T-Shirt (manufactured by Randori Fight-Wear)
is available in both Large and Extra-Large. Front left chest has fully
embroidered Extreme Impact Logo. Rear of shirt has “Extreme Impact Enough Said!”
banner printed in vinyl.
T-Shirts come sealed in clear plastic bag complete with Extreme Impact

cheap and flimsy martial arts wear.

like colours, only non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry medium, iron inside out, do
not dry clean.
Cost: £25.00. Price includes UK shipping. Overseas shipping will be

7 - Iain teaching in Kansas City, Missouri, USA
On
the 7th, 8th and 9th of October I may be teaching in Kansas City, Missouri metro
area, specifically at Blue River Community College in Independence, Missouri! I
enjoyed my time in the USA last year and am keen to get back over and spend a
little more time swapping ideas and shooting the breeze with all the fiends I’ve
made via these newsletters and the website.
We’re looking at the feasibility of a three day event to cover the following:
The Historical Development and Background of Kata
The 4 Stage Approach to Kata
The Language of Kata
How to Analyse the Movements of Kata
The Nature of Live Conflict
How to Create Effective Bunkai Drills
Karate Grappling (including throws, locks, chokes, strangles and groundwork).
Bunkai-Based Flow Drills
Kata-Based-Sparring (live bunkai drills and how to make them appropriate for all
levels)
Kata Applications including The Pinan / Heian Series, Tekki / Naihanchi,
Kushanku / Kanku-Dai, Passai / Bassai-Dai
The aim is to ensure that all participants can take the elements of what I teach
which fit with their existing approach so they can add them to their training
and teaching.
If this is something you may be interested in, please email Eric Parsons via
esparsons@gmail.com or
eric.parsons@mcckc.edu and we’ll be
sure to let you know what is happening as things progress.

9 - X-Po "League of Super Friends" Podcast Parts 1 to 11 (Complete)
Here
are parts 1 to 11 of the wide-ranging discussion recorded on the evening before
the USA side of the X-Po event earlier this year. Kris Wilder, Rory Miller, Marc
“Animal” MacYoung, Al Peasland, Nicholas Yang & myself had a good chat about all
things martial at Kris’s place and recorded it!
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/x-po-league-super-friends-podcast-parts-1-11-complete
It was split into eleven parts and we’ve been bringing each part as it was released. Seeing as all eleven parts are now available, I thought it would make sense to put them all on one page! For those who have been following along, the new ones to this site begin with part 7. Those new to this conversation (where have you been?!) can simply start with number 1!
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/x-po-league-super-friends-podcast-parts-1-11-complete
I hope you enjoy this “meeting of minds”!
All the
best,
Iain
PS The "league of super friends" title was totally my idea; it has not been endorsed by any other participants! ;-)

- The Kissaki Method DVD by Don Came
Message from Jon Slone:
Don Came, Kissaki Kai's UK chief instructor, has just wrapped up filming his first instructional DVD - The Kissaki Method. It's being produced by Harbour View Productions, the company Iain uses for his releases, and is being edited right now for sale in the coming months.
Don covers a series of flow drills he uses in his classes with the emphasis on partner training, natural stances, layering to build from solid foundations, a sound knowledge of basic anatomy and biomechanical principles but, above all else, functionality outside the dojo.
We'll update you closer to release. In the meantime, take a look at his site here:
http://www.karateacademy.org.uk
11 - Karate Throws demonstrated by Kase Sensei
Please find below a short youtube clip of a young Kase Sensei demonstrating some karate throwing techniques. While I personally would opt for a different entry (i.e. start closer) and not all of what is demonstrated is to my tastes (not keen on the “drop down and kick the angle out” one for example) the throws are very skilfully performed, as you would expect, and it’s a shame that throwing is ignored by many of today’s karateka. Not by the subscribers to this newsletter obviously! :-) However, perhaps those who are not practising karate in its totality should follow Kase’s example:
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/karate-throws-demonstrated-kase-sensei
The following forum discussion should also be of interest.
All the
best,
Iain
12 - Jigen-Ryu Swordsmanship
On the
page below you can find a link to an article on Jigen-Ryu (“revealed reality
school”). This was a system of swordsmanship that Sokon Matsumura is said to
have gained his teaching license in and also taught to his students including
Anko Asato (Funakoshi’s main karate teacher):
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/jigen-ryu-swordsmanship
Thanks to Stuart Squire for the find. The following quote caught my attention:
“Jigen-ryu places importance on the first sword strike, which must be
extraordinarily fast and powerful in order to defeat opponents. Jigen-ryu
teachings state that a second strike is not even to be considered.”
There is a strong parallel to the karate idea of fully committing to every
strike in order to end the fight there and then ("one blow- one kill") i.e. we
don’t use strikes to set up other techniques or to weaken the enemy. The
intention of every strike is to end it there and then; whether we use one strike
or many.
Further down the page you can also find a video which shows the use of the
striking post & a variety of pair work drills:
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/jigen-ryu-swordsmanship#comment-755
Fascinating stuff and I hope the video proves as interesting to you as it was to
me
All the best,
Iain

Learn in a small class the unique ‘Double Hip’ and it’s applications in both a
martial arts and street conflict situation.
With this 1 day class limited to just 20 people, there will be a substantial
opportunity to learn this dynamic impact development system, originally
developed by Sensei Shigeru Kimura of Shukokai Karate fame - my great
inspiration in respect of understanding and applying the most effective dynamics
to not only the development of impact, but movement, transitions between
techniques and speed.
The ‘foundation’ techniques were originally developed by Kimura with scientific
assistance from a Japanese university and included within the core Shukokai
Karate system.
Over the years, however, I have refined these core dynamics to be devastatingly
effective, not only in traditional Karate, but in a Full Contact/ MMA
environment and particularly for ‘Preemptive‘ striking in real life violent
encounters and as taught to numerous UK police forces, including Firearms/Close
Protection units. Punching, slaps, elbow, combinations and delivery at speed
will all be covered and more. You can fit these dynamics within your core
martial arts to give real effect.

The BCA (British Combat Association) has undoubtedly had a bigger impact on UK

effects I see the British Combat Karate Association having. I strongly feel the
British karate scene needs an organisation like this and I’m sure it will be of
interest to many of you.

24 - 121 Killer Appz! With Kris Wilder (Goju Bunkai)
Here
is a video you are sure to enjoy! 121 Killer Appz by Kris Wilder has to be one
of the most information dense DVDs I’ve ever viewed. You know that scene from
“Clockwork Orange” where the guy has had his eyes wired open while he is
bombarded with images …. this DVD is a little like that for us bunkai types! :-)
The usual DVD format has the presenter / instructor demonstrates and explain the
techniques of a single kata. 121 Killer Appz has a different approach in that it
quickly demonstrates technique after technique after technique so that
applications for Gekisai (Dai Ni), Saifa, Seiyunchin, Seipai, Kururunfa,
Suparinpei, Sanseiru, Shisochin, and Seisan Kata are covered in 47 minutes! The
editing style is very fast (think early MTV) and this will make a great
reference for karateka of all styles.
I found myself watching it in sessions in order not to overload my little brain
and having the remote handy for rewinds is a good idea. There’s just so much
here and you are bombarded with good material from start of finish. At $19.95
you simply can’t go wrong!
If you follow this link here you can find more information and see an online
clip. Enjoy!
All the best,
Iain

121 Killer Appz! Fighting
Applications From Goju-Ryu Karate
You know the kata, now it is time for the applications. Karate instructor and
author Kris Wilder demonstrates one fighting application after another in this
DVD presentation to supplement the katas learned in Goju-Ryu Karate. Wilder does
not teach the katas, but rather provides the applications found within the forms
for each student to learn, practice, and then build on to fully understand the
katas they practice.
Gekisai (Dai Ni), Saifa, Seiyunchin, Seipai, Kururunfa, Suparinpei, Sanseiru,
Shisochin, and Seisan Kata are covered. If you ever wondered what purpose a move
from a Goju-Ryu Kata was for, wonder no longer. For this DVD contains no kata
performed from multiple angels, and no discussion. Just a no-nonsense approach
to one application after another. It is sure to provide deeper understanding to
your Kata practice and stimulate thought on determining your own applications to
the Goju-Ryu Karate forms.
Kris Wilder has practiced martial arts for more than thirty-five years and has
advanced degrees in Karate, Judo, and Taekwondo. He is the author of The Way of
Sanchin Kata and co-author of several books, including The Little Black Book of
Violence and The Way To Black Belt. He resides in Seattle, WA, and teaches at
his West Seattle Karate Academy. Easy access menus. Running length approx: 47
minutes.
