1 – New Podcast: What Traditional Martial Artists can learn from MMA?

What TMA can learn from MMAThis month we discuss what traditional martial artists can learn from MMA! While it is increasingly common to see MMA and TMA (traditional marital arts) as rival approaches, it is my view that many of the practises and the general thinking found in MMA are of great value to the traditionalist and will actually help them maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of their art.

The irony is that much of MMA’s thinking with regards to live testing, innovation, measuring by effect, etc is in line with the views expressed by the karate masters of the past, even if it is at variance with “modern day traditionalists”! We discuss this irony and also briefly look at what MMA could learn from traditional martial arts. Finally, we look at the common ground and I suggest that best practise is best practise regardless of where it originates.

The second section of the podcast is the Question and Answer section where I give my thinking on the following topics: How to develop speed and the relationship between speed and power; the recording of the non-physical aspects of self-protection in kata; what I think of practising “block, kick, punch” bunkai alongside practical bunkai; combining practical and competitive karate in training; teaching wider self-protection skills in martial arts dojos; overtraining and how to avoid it; and the difference between recreational and “professional” martial artists.

As has been the trend in recent months, this is the longest podcast we have ever done (a huge 72 minutes!). I hope you find the podcast enjoyable, informative, entertaining and thought provoking. Thank you for your support of what we do and we’ll be back with more soon! Enjoy!

All the best,

Iain

3 – How to Live an Awesome Life (online video)

Here is a great talk on living an awesome life by Neil Pasricha! The video is quite funny in parts and the message is very uplifting. It’s just under 18 minutes long and is a very good investment of your time! Please follow the link below and then click play:

4 - Karate Kneeling Defences (Shotokan, Wado & Others)

Over the last few weeks there are been a superb discussion on the site on kneeling defenses in karate. The thread started by looking at the origins of such methods in Shotokan and Wado-Ryu, before quickly moving on to discuss the idea of training from vulnerable positions generally (i.e. sitting in a chair). The membership of the forum did an amazing job – as usual – in coming up with a whole host of videos from different systems and putting forth various viewpoints and opinions. It’s a great thread and one well worth checking out:

5 – Kudo: The Future of Competitive Karate (UK Course)

KudoIn previous months we have been discussing the Kudo competitive format. Personally, I see it as being the future of karate competitions and Peter Consterdine 9th Dan also feels that it has a level of realism that surpasses all alternative formats.

If you missed it, you can find lots of videos and thoughts on Kudo in this forum thread: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/future-format-competitive-karate-some-thoughts-and-videos

For those who want to learn more about Kudo (whether interested in competing or not) the British Combat Karate Association has organised a seminar with UK Kudo representative Lee Hasdell (also one of the UK’s first ever MMA competitors).

The seminar will run from 10:00 to 15:00 on Sunday the 29th of May (date change and no longer on the 15th, which sadly means I can’t make it) at the British Combat Academy in Osset, Yorkshire. Peter Consterdine and quite a few of my own students will be there and it should be a fun day!

If you are interested in attending can you please email Peter at peter@peterconsterdine.com and he will forward you the details.

I’VE SEEN THE LIGHT! For years I’ve put my not inconsiderable brainpower(!!!!) into thinking about what would be the finest ‘Full Contact’ competition – and never came up with it. That is until Iain Abernethy sent me a video link to look at and it was the Kudo World Championships and this was my ‘light bulb’ moment. So much so that I’ve spent a large part of the past week going over as much footage as I can to analyze the elements of Kudo competition and I now ‘get it.’ It is simply fantastic.” - Peter Consterdine 9th Dan.

7 – Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot Course 2011 (28th & 29th May)!

Mike LiptrotOn the weekend of the 28th & 29th of May Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot will be teaching their yearly not-to-be-missed two day martial arts seminar! This is the fifth annual seminar Iain and Mike have done together.

These events have been extremely popular and we expect this year's event to fill up very quickly. Once again, this event will take place in the highly impressive Kendal Judo Club Dojo - a recognised Olympic facility - which is in the heart of the Lake District national park.

This seminar is open to all martial artists - regardless of background, style, and current level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants.

Please put the date in your dairy as booking and accommodation details will be coming soon. We are just waiting to confirm one or two details to be confirmed and then I'll be sure to get all the information sent out. Apologies for the delay.

9 - Lewis Thompson Six Week Self-Defence Course

Louis Thompson 6 Week Self Defence Course (starts 24th April 2011)

Message from Louis Thompson:

You may have missed out on my previous 6 week course, but I am opening my doors again for a select few to join my exclusive training programme.

I have found the essence of self defence and I want to show you. People have travelled from around the UK to train on this course and the results are phenomenal.

Over the past 6 months I have been developing my methods to get the best possible results in a short period of time. I have created a system that guarantees results no matter what your skill level.

If you don't see the results that you want after the 1st session, I will give you your money back.

The exciting thing about this course is that I am using techniques and training methods that only a handful of people in the world are utilising. I won't give you a thousand different techniques over a hundred different arts but what I will give you is what has been proven to work consistently in real life violent confrontation.
I have had access to some of the most innovative self defence and martial arts instructors in the world throughout my whole life and now I am passing there knowledge onto you, as it was intended.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The course will run for 6 consecutive weeks starting on Sunday 24th April 2011. It will run from 9am - 11am (longer than any of the previous courses). We will leave no stone unturned. Here are some of the thing you will learn over the 6 week period.
The most cutting edge Self Defence theory from best selling manual Dead or Alive by Geoff Thompson including:

Avoidance and awareness
Attackers and attack rituals
Self Defence and the Law
Physical Techniques will include:
Pre-emptive strikes
The Fence (the most cutting edge self defence technique in the world)
Restrictive Striking
Chokes and strangles
Throws and take downs
Groundwork
The Cost

This course offers you 6 weeks of quality tuition for only £120. If you book before the end of March I will give you a free copy of Dead or Alive on day 1 of the course and remember, if you're not satisfied after the first session I will give you a full refund.

For full details and testimonials see: www.thompsonsd.com/content/self-defence-6-week-course

10 – Marc "Animal" MacYoung in UK in 2011

Hi All,

Marc, Me, Nick, Al, Kris, and RoryHere is your chance to train with Marc MacYoung in September! I’ve been a fan of Marc’s work for decades and it was great when I got to meet him in person last year. He’s a great guy, with a superb teaching style, and his material is as practical as it gets. This is not an opportunity to miss so be sure to contact Mick and let him know you would support this event. Mick Franklin is the organiser you can find all the details below. Be sure to contact him ASAP.

All the best,

Iain

(Left to Right: Nick Yang, Marc MacYoung, Rory Miller, Al Peasland, Iain Abernethy, Kris Wilder)

Message from Mick Franklin:

Greetings,

My name is Mick Franklin, I am a 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate but today I am writing to you as a representative of Conflict Communications. I wish to make you aware of our upcoming course on De-escalation. This 1 day course will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Marc MacYoung, a man who has lived and worked on the sharp end of life dealing with violent and aggressive people, but more importantly was able to attain and master the skills to defuse potentially violent situations, and then successfully pass those skills on to martial artists, hospital and police staff all around the world.

This course really is one of a kind. Rather than just being an "aggression management" course you will learn the source of all conflicts and more importantly what to do about them. The skills you will learn are not just useful for preventing violent attacks, but will also greatly benefit the way you interact with people in all situations, including at work and in your personal relationships. Your martial arts techniques may be superb but can you recognise when someone really intends to hurt you? Can you defuse a violent individual? Do you have the skills to explain to the police and courts what steps you took to avoid it becoming physical, and explain, in a legal sense, why you did what you had to do?

Course Dates: September the 3rd for De-escalation, September the 4th for the Body Mechanics in Martial Arts course
Course Costs: £40 for 1 day only, or £70 for both days
Location: Edinburgh
Duration: 8 hours each day

If you would like some further insight in to Mr MacYoung's training you should begin with his website, I think you will be impressed:

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/

I have also included a brochure of the De-escalation Course for you below.

If this is something you would like to press ahead with, or if you just have some questions, then let me know. I am taking note of interest now.

Kind regards,

Mick Franklin

P.S. Marc MacYoung will be running a course on Body Mechanics in Martial Arts on the day after the De-escalation Course. This course will show you how to generate more power from your techniques (regardless of your style) and to apply a critical eye to why a technique works or doesn't work, as well as making students aware of important elements that are currently missing from the way bunkai and kata is taught in most schools. I can not say much about it now -keep an eye on the magazine Martial Arts Illustrated for the first news on this exciting material in an indepth interview with Mr MacYoung. I can honestly say, however, that despite my 10 years of full contact Kyokushin Karate I have learned a lot from Marc in a very short time about good technique and generating power.

De-escalation Course

Marc MacYoung is a highly respected expert on conflict and violence. He is the author of 15 books and 6 videos dealing with different aspects of de-escalation, conflict resolution, self defense and use of force. He has conducted many seminars for police, security, hospital staff and martial artists alike around the world. He has lived and worked on the sharp end of life, including the mean streets of Los Angeles, and working in security and correctional services.

The sharp end is not an exaggeration. Despite 100's of incidents involving physical violence, he feels his greatest achievements are the 1,000s of incidents that were peacefully resolved. He has been very successful at talking down violent, sometimes psychotic, people. He honed his communication skills because the options were 'de-escalate or bleed.' He knows first hand conflict situations are emotional, stressful and scary.  His proven ability as a 'Thug Whisperer' isn’t magic. It is a learnable, teachable skill.

Teaming up with Rory Miller, a retired Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff and CERT leader, they developed Conflict Communications. During the development of the program for law enforcement, they realized insights and conflict strategies developed for de-escalating physically violent people also work with employees, managers, co-workers, spouses and teenagers. The had stumbled across the Rosetta Stone of conflict. Hence, Conflict Communication training is available in six different areas.

Law Enforcement Training
Correctional/Sworn Officers
Human Resources
Legal
Social Services/Schools
High Risk/Conflict Management

Why this course can help you:

*One, your safety. Knowing the 'check list' of pre-attack indicators, you can tell the difference between a loud and emotional -- but harmless -- threat display and when someone is preparing to attack. We also teach the importance of tactical positioning as an important component of de-escalation (without threatening someone you can still show them you are not safe to attack)

*Two, there are two kinds of bad use of force, excessive and unnecessary. Excessive is rare. Unnecessary is a legal nightmare you don't want to find yourself in. This training reduces these kinds of unnecessary incidents.

*Three, it indemnifies and protects you by teaching you to better articulate use of force incidents -- especially the build up to violence.

*Four, We are the only program that addresses how not to get caught in the emotional and primitive 'monkey dance' of conflict. One of our mottos is 'De-escalate yourself first.' If you can't do that, you are heading for an unnecessary use of force incident. You cannot be professional and let 'the monkey drive the bus.'

Before you can de-escalate someone else, you must de-escalate yourself.

We give you the means to do that.

Before you can apply other training you must have emotional control.

We'll show you how

Before you can find the 'best answer' for a situation, you have to know what's happening

We'll teach you the key points to look for in conflict

Before you can explain yourself in court, you have to know what happened

Well teach you how to articulate what you did to calmly resolve the situation and why you had to do what you did.

This program doesn't replace any previous training.

It makes it work better.

But more than all of that, this program is about improving communication and strategies to reduce and better deal with conflict. Other programs teach tactics. This program teaches WHY conflicts happen and how they manifest in different circumstances. We also teach about the irrational, emotional 'monkey brain agenda' issues that -- until they are addressed -- the conflict will NOT be resolved. These unresolved agendas which cause conflict will return. Whether the same fight over and over again or an argument over something completely different.

Basically it isn't that other programs don't work.  The information is  sound and technically correct. What people are lacking is this foundation to be able to apply those techniques out where they need them. We supply that. We don't replace any training, we just help people apply it out in the field.

This program is also useful in the workplace. Within many organisations there are serious problems between workers and departments. Politics, conflict, people not meeting professional standards, legal issues, troublesome behaviors and sometimes even physical violence  ... the list is endless. And this list of problems costs more in time, money and waste than the correct training to deal with them effectively ever will.

That's where we can help. By teaching about the dynamics of conflict, monkey brain agendas and default emotional scripts, those issues that create ongoing conflicts and tensions within a group can be addressed and problems actually solved. When that happens productivity goes up, money is not only saved, but made and the likelihood of being sued goes way down.

Yes, this is a de-escalation program. Yes, it is a conflict management program.  Yes, it is a conflict resolution program. It's all of that and more. What it really is is a bridge over the gap between training and application. It is what a person needs to know so they can take their previous training and actually apply it in a stressful, emotional and even dangerous situation.

18 – Iain teaching in Kansas City, Missouri, USA

American FlagAs I mentioned in the last couple of newsletters, on the 7th, 8th and 9th of October I may be teaching in Kansas City, Missouri metro area, specifically at Blue River Community College in Independence, Missouri! The support has been strong and it now looks very likely that this event will be going ahead. I enjoyed my time in the USA last year and am keen to get back over and spend a little more time swapping ideas and shooting the breeze with all the fiends I’ve made via these newsletters and the website.

We’re looking at the feasibility of a three day event to cover the following:

The Historical Development and Background of Kata
The 4 Stage Approach to Kata
The Language of Kata
How to Analyse the Movements of Kata
The Nature of Live Conflict
How to Create Effective Bunkai Drills
Karate Grappling (including throws, locks, chokes, strangles and groundwork).
Bunkai-Based Flow Drills
Kata-Based-Sparring (live bunkai drills and how to make them appropriate for all levels)
Kata Applications including The Pinan / Heian Series, Tekki / Naihanchi, Kushanku / Kanku-Dai, Passai / Bassai-Dai

The aim is to ensure that all participants can take the elements of what I teach which fit with their existing approach so they can add them to their training and teaching.

If this is something you may be interested in, please email Eric Parsons via esparsons@gmail.com or eric.parsons@mcckc.edu and we’ll be sure to let you know what is happening as things progress. Thanks to all those who have already done so!

20 - Iain Abernethy Instructor's Courses (express your interest)

It’s been a few years now since I last ran an introductory instructors’ course. Demand has been quite high and hence I’m looking to finally run one early next year. I’m letting everyone know now because places will be limited and hence I need to make an interested persons list as soon as possible. To be eligible for the course you need to fulfil the following criteria:

All participants must hold a dan grade.
All participants must be a certified instructor with their governing body
All participants must have teaching experience and be actively teaching others
All participants must be over 18 years
All participants must be in good health and have valid insurance
All participants must have had sufficient exposure to Iain's methods (i.e. a regular at the seminars etc)

If you meet the criteria, and would like to do the course, please send me an email (iain@iainabernethy.com) and I’ll keep you in the loop as things progress.

Note: If you are training under one of the small number of instructors to complete the FULL instructor’s course, please contact them about this. Because they will be able to help you prepare, I’m planning a special “fast track” course for the students of existing full instructors later in the year.

The BCA (British Combat Association) has undoubtedly had a bigger impact on UK martial arts than any other body and I’m really excited about the positive effects I see the British Combat Karate Association having. I strongly feel the British karate scene needs an organisation like this and I’m sure it will be of interest to many of you.

Please check out the downloads and the information below and if you have any questions Peter will be only to happy to answer them.
