One-Step-Sparring Podcast & Age-Zuki
Video!
Hi All,
Welcome
to the latest newsletter! An especially warm welcome to all the new members!
It’s good to have you on board. Thanks to all existing members for spreading the
word about these newsletters. It is very gratifying to see our numbers keep
growing and I really appreciate the support!
It’s been a little while since the last newsletter so lots to tell you about!
The first thing is that a new podcast on one-step-sparring has just been added
to the website and iTunes! You can find more details in section one.
Since the last newsletter I’ve also added three new online videos to the
website! The topics covered in these videos are age-zuki (rising strike),
surprise sparring, and a takedown into a strangle. If you go to section two
below you can find more information.
I’ve also recently started producing what I can “mini-casts”. These are short
impromptu podcasts made using the iphone’s justsayin app. You can listen to them
via any web-browser and I’ll let everyone know when a new one is uploaded via
facebook and twitter. There’s several online already and I hope to get a couple
of new ones recorded and uploaded each week. Section three contains the links
and further information.
There's quite a few new books to tell you about
too! In particular, please checkout section 5 for details on how you can
download a free chapter of Lee Taylor's new book which covers applications for
the whole of Pinan Shodan / Heian Nidan!
There are quite a few seminars coming up soon
including events in the UK, Germany, Chicago and Alabama! See section four for
all the detials!
One the seminar side of things there is only one
free date for the first half of 2013, so if you want me to visit your dojo on
Sunday the 5th of May, please let me know as soon as you can (iain@iainabernethy.com).
Loads more to tell you about so please check out the contents section below and
see what takes your fancy!
All the best,
Iain

1 - New Podcast! One Step Sparring
This
month’s podcast covers one-step sparring; as well as the related practises of
three-step and five-step sparring. Whist a very common form of practise in
karate, taekwondo, etc. it is my belief that such training is a largely
pointless. In the podcast I look at why I feel one-step sparring is a “dead-end”
and why it does not develop any useable attributes. It is important to isolate
techniques however, but this needs to be done in a way that can progress to live
practise and free flowing application. I therefore also suggest what I see as
better ways to isolate techniques.
The
podcast also looks at common arguments made in favour of one-step sparring and
explains why I don’t think they hold up to close scrutiny. I hope you enjoy the
podcast and that, regardless of weather you agree with my position or not, you
find it provides food for thought. Enjoy and I’ll be back with more soon!
All the
best,
Iain

2 - New Online Videos!
Since the last newsletter I've added three new
online videos to the website:
This video was filmed at the dojo a few days ago while we were practicing both
the common uppercut and “age-zuki”. While I feel it is important to learn both
punches, the age-zuki does have some advantage when fighting with bare fists.
One advantage is that impact is more likely to be made with the large knuckles
as opposed to the joints of the fingers. It should be understood that one of the
key reasons the common uppercut is performed as it is because the rules of
boxing only recognise blows delivered with the front of the fist. Outside of the
boxing ring, there is no reason why we should not also practise rising strikes
that make contact with the back on the knuckles too; as we find in kata such as
Enpi / Wanshu, Seishan / Hangetsu, etc. The common uppercut still needs to be
part of practise though as it becomes very useful when extremely close. So it’s
not a case of one or the other, but making use of both. I hope you enjoy this
quick clip and I’ll be back with more soon.
Age-Zuki Online Video:

There are a number of exclusive articles and videos on the World Combat
Association website. These items are normally only available to WCA members and
instructors. However, we thought we’d share this one (as a one off) to give
people an idea of the kind of thing WCA members have access too. For more

WCA Members Video: Surprise Sparring and
Default Positions:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/wca-members-video-surprise-sparring-and-default-positions
This is a little bit of impromptu footage recorded
in the dojo a couple of weeks ago. The students had been sparring for most of
the class and this was taken while they were cooling down with some technique
work. The techniques demonstrated in this clip can be found in various kata
including Pinan / Heian Yodan (the standing strangle), Naihanchi / Tekki (the
head control and knee), Chinto / Gankaku (the kneeling strangle), etc, etc. It
is important to ensure the methods of the solo form are practised in various
combinations and contexts. It is also important that the methods are given
free-reign in drills and live practise.

3 - New "Mini-Casts"!
I’m
trying out the idea of regular “mini-casts”. These will be 2 to 5 minute audio
blog posts done 2 or 3 times a week where I share some thoughts, something
interesting I have read, some news, etc. They will be a little “rough and ready”
and recorded and uploaded directly from my mobile phone. If this is something
you think may be interesting please check them out and tell others! You can
listen to all the mini-casts (short podcasts) to date on the following webpage.
So far I’ve discussed multiple enemies, the differences between being “trained,
experienced and skilled”; micro-training, training for fun and complexity vs.
simplicity. Follow me on Facebook or Twitter to be made aware the instant these
things go live.

5 - New Bunkai Book (including a free sample to download!)
The
Heians or Pinans are widely the most recognisable and practised kata in karate
circles today, they are also arguably the most misunderstood. If analysed,
practised and taught effectively the Heian/Pinan kata have the potential to be a
complete fighting system for the learning karateka, containing strikes, kicks,
joint locks, throws, grappling and so on
With over 350 detailed pictures this book shows how the Heian kata can be used
as tools for a physical confrontation, building skills for this environment that
could help an individual escape from this scenario, using simple, effective,
progressive bunkai contained within this series of kata.
‘Lee’s book helps show that karate can be a very real solution to the problem of
civilian self defence. It is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.’ -

FREE
SAMPLE
This PDF on the Heian Shodan kata and bunkai is an extract from the book Heian /
Pinan Kata & Bunkai - The Fundamentals.
Please download your free sample via this link:
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/sites/default/files/file_attach/docs/Lee_Taylor_Kata_Bunkai_Sample.pdf
In that book all 5 of the Heian / Pinan kata are examined in detail from the
solo performance of each kata, to the two person bunkai sequences.
This PDF details the first kata of the Heian series, Heian Shodan (Pinan Nidan)
showing in detail move by move of the solo performance of the kata and the
bunkai applications that are carried out with a partner.
It is designed to give the reader an introduction into the Heian / Pinan kata
and how applicable and a viable solution this series of kata can be in a
civilian self defence scenario. It does not replace formal instruction in a
class environment from a suitably qualified instructor.
It does however offer the learning karateka a point of reference for their
personal training and development, hopefully spurring them on to find their own
way opening up their kata training and revitalising their interest in bunkai as
it did mine.
The complete book containing all 5 kata and bunkai sequences can be purchased

8 - Memoirs of a Karate Fighter
E-BOOK
RELEASE
Tuesday 15th January 2012
Memoirs of a Karate Fighter
Memoirs of a Karate Fighter is the coming-of-age story charting Ralph Robb's
journey to adulthood, and the friendships he forged along the way, from his wise
elderly neighbour to the karate champions who act as his mentors at the dojo of
what was then the top karate club in England, the Wolverhampton YMCA. Robb
presents a compelling insight into the world of 1980s Britain, when racism was
rife, and young men were surrounded by violence from a tender age. His first
steps into fatherhood, and his brotherly bond with his closest friend and
training partner Clinton are described in sensitive detail, as is Clinton's
tragic struggle with mental illness.
“Inspirational and thought provoking. It is a life worth reading about and Ralph
Robb's writing is compelling as it is impeccable” - Irish Fighter Magazine
Young
adult non-fiction - Release date: 24th January 2013 - ISBN: 9781908446152 -
Ebook: £6.99
Author Ralph Robb said: “I had my first novel ‘What Goes Around’ published in
1999 and since the death of my cousin Clinton I had wanted to write something
that would be a tribute to him. I had a contract with a publisher, so I sent
them the manuscript of Memoirs of a Karate Fighter and I’m glad to say that they
were very enthusiastic about it.”
“Hopefully this book will also keep the memories of the Wolverhampton YMCA going
for a while longer.”

9 - Gavin Towers Seminar
While
many of my students are avid cross-trainers and we are all regular seminar
attendees, there are only four instructors that I have personally invited to
teach in my dojo. One of those was Gavin Towers. I met Gavin through the Judo
and was very impressed by him as a person, martial artist and athlete. I
therefore asked him to teach at my dojo so my students could have a look at
Bagua; one of a number of Chinese systems Gavin has studied since childhood.
Gavin has studied Shaolin Kung Fu, Baji Quan, Chen, Yang, Yang Ban Hou and Sun
Style Tai Chi, Xingyi Chuan and Bagua Zhang and Health Qigong. Additionally he
has also practised boxing, Judo, Wing Chun, Hapkido, Aikido, MMA, and he has
also trained with Karate practitioners. Gavin is also currently a member the
team GB VI Judo squad.
Gavin is a great teacher, he moves and fights incredibly well, and he’s a
thoroughly nice guy too. My students and I really enjoyed Gavin’s teaching. I
highly recommend him to all martial artists who want to broaden their horizons.
Gavin is running an open seminar on the 16th of March which I’m sure will be of
great interest to many of you. More details can be found on Gavin’s website and
in the poster below:
http://empoweringqigong.wordpress.com/
Please also be sure to read the text below the poster which explains the
benefits of what this course will be covering.
All the best,
Iain
http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/empowering-qigong-seminar-gavin-towers-16th-march

A complete martial system, why practise Qigong?
Perception is a wonderful thing. Qigong is perceived in a myriad of ways, for
many in Chinese Martial Arts it was always seen as the ‘good stuff’, the secret
that unlocked all the mystery of internal power. I like that idea and I love the
fact that there is still a little bit magical remaining in the world. However,
the secret is that the magic comes from informed diligent practise, with this in
mind there is no denying Qigong can significantly develop your mind and body.
I believe Qigong reflects everything we do in life, the practice of Empowering
Qigong exercises enables us to develop a greater understanding of our bodies and
minds helping to develop our health and clarify our outlook. I also believe that
it is important to put Qigong into a martial context for people to better
understand where it fits into all traditional martial arts.
Waigong (external) Neigong (Internal) and Qigong are all part of the same whole,
a complete martial arts system, mutually supportive and dependant for health and
martial outlook.
Traditionally every young martial artist, regardless of their chosen system,
created a solid foundation on which to build through the practise of Waigong.
The simplicity of physical grounding enabled them to prepare the mind and body
for more complex skills in Nei and Qigong, allowing the body to gain strength
and understand the fundamentals of movement. For me my Waigong foundation was
created through Kung Fu and Karate.
Traditional thinking highlighted that through Waigong we gain an insight into
Neigong, through Neigong we gain insight into Qigong and completing the circle
through Qigong we gained greater insight into Waigong. Without a grounding in
each of these areas a practitioner will struggle to understand the other areas
of their art.
In simple terms Waigong is the external element of martial arts training.
Balance, agility, speed, strength, flexibility, stance and posture both static
and moving come under this heading. The context for Waigong practise is
development of the external fighting elements of the system.
Neigong practise aims to refine and develop the skills learnt during Waigong
practise. With a view to creating natural and efficient movement, breathing and
relaxation techniques are introduced. Giving the practitioner a greater
understanding of the mind and body whilst working to develop parts of the body
not previously developed. The mind body connection starts to shape intent,
practice and the positive flow of Qi.
Qigong further develops the body and mind through breath, visualisation,
meditation, movement and stillness through structured and spontaneous practise.
Fundamentally Qigong developed the internal and external strength of the body
whilst developing the focus and application of the mind. The strength of martial
Qigong lies in its simplicity to tap into and build on a solid foundation
created through diligent practise of Nei and Wai Gong. As stated before the
incorporation of Qigong into the practise of any martial art will lead to a
greater understanding of the art as a whole and is a fundamental part of any
complete system.
We regularly meet good practitioners of specific arts who carry serious injuries
as a result of their practice, or practitioners who are more academic in
outlook. This is often an unfortunate reflection of over focus on a part of a
system and not the whole.
I met one of the best advertorials for a full system in 2010 in the form of a 70
year old practitioner of Chinese Internal Arts of Bagua Zhang, Liu Jin Ru. A
master of Xing Yi Chuan, Tai Chi Chuan, and Praying Mantis, he embodied a
complete system, healthy, strong and happy with devastating explosive martial
skill. He like all other experienced practitioners I have met was clear a
martial artist must never overlook the bitter with a view to basking in the
blossom.
All arts work towards generating physical and mental health, through conscious
practice whether that be martial arts. The importance of the Dantian or Hara is
as important to calligraphy, or the tea ceremony as it is to Karate or Tai Chi
Chuan. To be able to act from a strong centre requires a full, balanced flow of
Qi.
Practitioners find their way to Qigong for many reasons. The key to good
practice and teaching is understanding what is relevant to personal development.
If a complete system is truly successful the result should be a good person. The
responsibility for this lies with us.

12 - An Elf’s Tale (The Origin of the Elf Defense Squad) is the work of Don
Burnell
An Elf’s Tale (The Origin of the Elf Defense Squad) is the work of Don Burnell,
a 30 plus year martial artist and a Martial arts Movie enthusiast. The story
behind the creation of this tale is that about nine years ago, a young student
came to me with a gift in hand. “Sensei!” the young student said, “I saw this
t-shirt when we were out shopping and I told my mom, ‘We should get this t-shirt
for Sensei. I bet he would like it.’” (The t-shirt was a picture of Santa in a
Karate stance and the caption read) When the young student held up the t-shirt,
I laughed and said, “I should write a movie script about that. Well, that’s just
what I did. (This book is adapted from that script.)....and I still have the
t-shirt. The elements for my script as well as the book were inspired by
many of the many, many, many martial arts and action movies that I have watched
over the years; combined with what I thought was an original concept of a
disgruntled Elf looking to get all the Fame and Glory of being the most popular
Legendary Figure in the world. Who would have thought that the Christmas would
be threatened by one of Santa’s helpers!
