Hi Friend
Did you know that some people are saying this is true?
The idea goes something like this...
By doing too much cardio, your body goes into 'survival mode' and starts storing more body fat. I've even had clients 'educate' me about this.
I wonder:
How much cardio is too much?
Where does the body get more fat from to store more body fat?
Here's the truth: Cardiovascular training uses fuel.
(Mostly fat when performed at lower intensities).
And let's not forget our bodies only accumulate more body fat when we consume more energy than we use.
Here's where this idea that cardio makes you fat comes from...
It is possible to hit fat loss plateaus and even cause some 'damage' to one's metabolism, resulting in down-regulation.
I've seen this in physique competitors on extremely low Calories for long periods, combined with excessive amounts of cardio (I've seen 3 hours a day).
But this ain't your average Joe who is 35% body fat because he overeats and is disappointed about the scales not shifting after a couple of weeks of doing a few cardio sessions a week.
Unless this dude has a medical problem (thyroid or other hormonal issues), he's not losing weight because he's still overeating.
You've probably had clients swear they are only eating 2000 Calories when it's actually more like 2500.
I'm not saying there aren't other issues that make losing fat harder; I point to PCOS. That is a tough one, and it usually requires strict adherence to a specific eating and supplementation plan to see improvements.
But the bottom line is this:
There are more people underreporting their food intake than there are people with 'damaged' metabolisms.
And cardio doesn't make you fat. The opposite is true; cardio is a tool for achieving a leaner body and a healthier heart.
Best wishes,
Alan.
