Episode 2: Why it's not important they they understand your chronic illness |
|
|
|
Hi Friend,
When you become chronically ill, you really want those closest to you to understand what you have lost, why the illness feels so devastating and how you feel about what chronic illness has done to your life. But needing people to understand how you feel can be a big emotional hook that you can get stuck on.
When the people around you don't understand or don't seem to want to listen to how you feel or even worse, accuse you of constantly complaining, you can feel hurt, betrayed, rejected and abandoned.
This is why you need to know why it's not important that they understand how you feel.
In this episode, I break down why it's so difficult for others to understand your chronic illness and what you can focus on instead that will help you, your partner and your family adapt to your life with chronic illness in the best possible way for you.
Here's the link to the blog where you can listen or find it and subscribe on iTunes, Spotify and most podcast players.

I want to introduce you to my amazing client *Emma. Emma has a collection of various autoimmune and other serious health issues, many of them caused by botched surgeries and as a result, she is mostly bed bound.
Because of the after affects of the surgery and her autoimmune conditions, she has to be tube fed and have other interventions to keep her functioning as well as she can. When I first met Emma, she was suffering from medically induced PTSD and trauma. She was hyper-vigilant of her body, constantly anxious, teary and monitoring each and every tiny symptom in case she needed to be taken to hospital again.
Emma also suffered a lot of guilt because her husband had to leave work to take full time care of her and their young children and that they all relied on their parents support to financially survive and pay all of the medical expenses.
There was no joy in Emma's life at all. She felt completely unable to relax, had difficulty sleeping, was in constant pain and unable to make some serious medical decisions because of the trauma she had experienced in hospital before.
The first things we worked on were eliminating Emma's trauma because her PTSD was completely running her life and causing so much pain and inflammation.
Once we did that, Emma was able to start feeling more in the moment, think more clearly and start feeling she had much more control over her life.
With the new emotional framework I gave her and all of the mind shift tools that Emma picked up and immediately started using, the anxiety and guilt began to melt away.
About half way through our program, Emma was feeling well enough to spend time out of bed and join her family in the living room for a few hours and spend some time with her children, something she had so missed and had so much guilt about.
Near the end of our program, Emma was so thrilled to share with me that she had been able to go to the local park in her wheel chair with her husband and children and watch them play.
She was so elated to feel like she was taking an active part in her families life again.
Emma was able to get her joy back and appreciate all of the good moments that were available to her. She began to do her knitting again in bed, something that she had stopped months before because her anxiety levels and lack of focus were so high.
Seeing Emma coming back to life, being able to feel relaxed, feel worthy, start setting boundaries and taking back control of making the medical decisions that worked best for her was the most wonderful thing to see!
I am immensely proud of Emma because even though she still spends most of her time in bed, she is open and available to enjoying everything she can in her life and feeling like a present and loving Mother, Wife and woman.
