I don't have to be sick enough for you.
Dear Friend,

There is no denying now that the start of the holiday season is upon us and you know what that means!

Having to listen to all of the comments and advice about your health or your weight, some well meaning but many, not.

You know the sort of thing I mean.

"But you look so well."

"Shouldn't you be feeling better by now?"

"You are just being ridiculous, eating this won't hurt you."

"You don't look sick to me."

"Maybe you are just depressed."

"You just need to eat less and exercise more."

"I wish I had IBD so I could get as skinny as you."

"How can you be so tired all the time?"

"I know how you feel, I have had this cold for weeks."

Those comments can drive you crazy or leave you feeling judged, blamed, ridiculed and more alone than ever.

Sometimes, it can even make you doubt that your illness is as bad as you say it is.

You might start wondering if you really are being a hypochondriac or if you just don't have what it takes to soldier on and get on with it the way that others seem to do so easily.

Here is the thing though Friend.

You don't have to be sick enough for others to believe you.

  • You don't have to prove to anyone that you have chronic illness.
  • You don't need to justify what you are doing to help yourself heal.
  • You don't need to live up to anyones expectations of you and it's not really necessary if they believe you or not.

Some of my clients have the feeling that if they are not actively showing disability, pain or symptoms, that no one will believe that they are suffering.

My view is that I truly don't care if anyone else believes me or not because I know what I have.

I know how I feel.

I don't have to prove anything to anyone who doubts what I live with, because I know they won't "get it" until or unless it happens to them.

In the meantime though, know this.

  • You can be happy and laughing and still have chronic illness
  • You can be feeling good and still have chronic illness.
  • You can look healthy and still have chronic illness.
  • You don't have to be sick enough to be believed.

With the holiday season coming up, arm yourself with this truth.

You have nothing to prove to anyone else.

You know how you feel.

You know what you have.

You know how hard you are trying to manage your disease/s and take care of your health.

Feel free to tell the doubters "I don't have to be sick enough for you!"
