Subject: 9 critical mistakes audience building

ARE YOU MAKING THESE 9 MISTAKES?

Hey Friend

I wanted to say hello again, just to check you aren't making these 9 mistakes when trying to build your audience online.

You see, there are some common mistakes people make that you should avoid.

1: Not Knowing Your Audience Well. You need to know who your audience members are, what they like, and what problems they face. This shouldn’t be guesswork — research your audience to create a detailed target client avatar. (use the free template I sent you the other day)

"Like I said in my previous email, the best way to learn your prospects pain points is to speak with them directly."

2: Being Generic. You have to stand out from your competitors and offer something different that they don’t. There are so many Life Coaches and Experts creating similar offers, but try to drill down exactly what makes you unique and emphasise this.

"What different skills, expertise and experience can you bring to the table that your competitors don't have?"

3: Poor Branding. If not done well and purposefully, your branding could be sending the wrong message. At every touchpoint where prospects encounter your brand, they should clearly understand its vision and values.

"If your prospect came across your Facebook Profile, would they be able to tell exactly who you help, what problem you solve and how you solve it?"

4: Not Enough Content. You need a constant stream of content to inform, entertain, and engage your audience. There can never be too much and the more, the better (as long as it’s high-quality).

"Now, trust me. I for one know how much work it takes to create content. It is time-consuming.... I get it. But consider re-purposing older content, add to it or switch it up. Remember you have new visitors to your pages that haven't seen content you posted a year ago."

5: Not Tracking Results. How do you know if you’re reaching your goals if you don’t track your results? Choose a few key metrics that will demonstrate through objective data whether your audience is growing the way you want it to.

"Unfortunately, I see this all the time. I've worked with clients that are aimlessly posted content on social media with no real objective or goal. If the content you are creating is not leading to sales then you are wasting valuable time. You need to know if you content is creating business and how you can measure that."

6: Focusing Solely on Size. Naturally, you want to grow a large audience. But many people focus solely on numbers and not on engagement, which is equally, if not more important.

"You know, you can make great money off a small audience if they are highly targeted and engaged. Spend more time building relationships with your existing audience. Quality over Quantity."

7: One-Way Communications. You shouldn’t be broadcasting content to a passive audience to consume. Your content should engage people and get them involved with you and each other.

"When you posted on social media, your blog or even writing emails, invite your readers to comment, share or reply to you in some way. Questions are a great way to encourage replies."

8: Missing in Action. Are you present often enough to respond to your audience’s needs in a timely manner? You should be checking in daily to respond to messages and comments to show that you’re responsive.

"I often say 'Don't be a hit and run poster' if you ask a question on social media, make sure you stay around to reply back to the answers etc. If you have your notifications turned on your phone, it's easy enough to see when people have replied. It only takes a minute to reply back."

9: Too Much Promotion. Don’t over-promote. Focus on helping people solve their problems and achieve their goals; then, your products or services will sell themselves.

"Obviously the more promotions the more sales, but don't let your audience get burn't out. I wouldn't promote more than once a day, or even just promote a few times per week."

If you avoid these 9 common mistakes, you’ll start to grow a highly engaged audience of loyal fans and clients for years to come.
