Austin Energy status + Park Volunteer Day reminder

May 30, 2025 | Storm Recovery Efforts

Dear Neighbors,
District 10 continues to struggle with power outages and cleanup from Wednesday's storm. D10 neighborhoods were among those hit particularly hard by this fast and destructive storm, with winds estimated to be 80 mph or higher.

I'm grateful to first responders and city crews who have been working tirelessly to address emergencies, restore power, haul large debris, and keep us safe.

Please see below for the status of Austin Energy efforts, plus a reminder about our volunteer work day tomorrow at Great Hills Neighborhood Park, where I'll be joining neighbors to remove dead brush from an earlier destructive storm

You can always reach out to my office with questions – please contact as us at district10@austintexas.gov

AUSTIN ENERGY UPDATE

Austin Energy crews have been working 24/7 since immediately after the storm and have made significant progress in restoring power across the city. At the peak, there were 72,500 customers without power. Currently 19,000 customers remain without power from 337 separate outages.

Because of the complicated nature of many of these outages, it’s difficult to provide specific estimated times of restoration. Fortunately, mutual aid crews from throughout the state have arrived in Austin to assist Austin Energy workers in making repairs

Austin Energy uses a three-phase approach to restoration:

  • Phase 1: Focus on critical load, life/safety services; getting main line circuits energized; assessing damage systemwide.

  • Phase 2: Focus on restoring outages affecting the largest number of customers. (We are in this phase now).

  • Phase 3: Smaller outages (including single customer outages) that are often more complex and time-consuming.

Communicating with Austin Energy

  • Austin Energy will continue frequent text communication with customers experiencing outages.

  • It’s possible that some damage may involve equipment owned by the homeowner. If that’s the case, following assessment AE will provide informational door hangers with instructions on next steps.

  • Call 512-322-9100 to report a downed power line. If the line is sparking, call 911.

  • View and report current outages on the Austin Energy outage map:
    https://outagemap.austinenergy.com/

  • You can also report outages by texting OUT to 287846 or calling 512-322-9100.

  • Monitor Austin Energy on XFacebookInstagram

Cleanup Efforts

Call 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000 to:

  • Report clogged storm drains or large debris in roadways

  • Report tree limbs on wires

  • Report hanging tree limbs or limbs on roofs

For downed tree branches and limbs on your property:

  • DO NOT attempt to remove limbs on power lines or within 10 ft of power lines

  • Place small branches and leaves in green compost bins and other bins/bags for regular pickup. No limit on containers for debris from the storm

  • Place large limbs and branches at curbside then call 3-1-1 to report. Customers do not need to go through the On Demand scheduling to have their material collected.

REMINDER: PARK DAY THIS SATURDAY

REMINDER: My office is teaming up with Austin Parks Foundation to reduce wildfire risk at Great Hills Neighborhood Park by removing “dead-and-down” brush from the 2023 ice storm. We have checked the park for dangerous debris and hanging tree limbs from Wednesday's storm, but fortunately the park was not hard hit and is safe for volunteers.

WHEN: Saturday May 31, 9am - 12pm

WHERE: Great Hills Neighborhood Park, Floral Park Trailhead

SIGN UP: Register here

Join your neighbors and your D10 Council Member Marc Duchen in supporting our neighborhood park. We'll help cut and move dry brush to the trailhead for haul-away. Dead brush creates wildfire risk, and this project will serve as a pilot for low-cost fire-mitigation solutions.

Please wear long sleeves and pants to protect from scratches, and bring a reusable water bottle. Thank you for giving back to our parks and green spaces!

See you on Saturday!
