Out of Darkness
Anna Darlene Edmondson

“You are a chosen people, God’s possession, who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1Peter 2:9 ESV).

At 4 a.m. this morning, a fire alarm repeatedly blared in my five-story apartment building. This was yery scary, especially since I had just moved in. Unfamiliar with escape routes, panic choked me. Groping for a light switch in pitch-blackness, I became petrified. Thankfully, it turned out to be a false alarm. Given that experience, I thought, ‘oh my, what a depressing dungeon this world would be without the sun’s light, and even more perilous if devoid of spiritual light.’ Next, I recalled John’s words, “In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, for the darkness cannot put it out” (John 1:4-5).

Of course, we know that darkness is the absence of light. In Genesis 1:2, we learn about darkness existing before the light of creation. It also symbolizes man’s rebellion against God and describes the condition of those who have not yet followed the light concerning Jesus, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). In declaring Himself to be the light of the world, Jesus avows that He alone, exclusively, is the source of spiritual light.

Jesus is the divine self-expression of God with us, “For in Christ the fullness of God lives in a human body” (Col 2:9). Therefore, believers in Jesus are now ‘the light of the world’ (Matt 5:14). We are stronger than Satan and darkness. For this reason, we no longer stumble in the night, but bravely march toward the perfect Light.

"For anyone on the fence, backsliding, or doubtful this book clarifies misunderstandings, perceived contradictions, and outright lies. I was led to read this book at a time when I thought I was over Jesus; but truth defeats lies every time and never forsakes the believer." 2-18-17
