He cut our electricity, slashed our tires, and waited outside with a gun. I was 9 years old. The man? My soon-to-be-ex-stepfather.
This memory is seared into my psyche.
I cannot forget it. And the thing is, I don’t want to forget it.
The things I witnessed and experienced (some of them just as bad as this one) made me into who I am today. It's part of why I became a lawyer.
And also, why freedom is one of my top values. More than fairness. More than equity. More than almost anything (other than family).
If you ask someone in the United States whether they value freedom, they’ll probably say “yes” (listing the “freedoms” of speech, worship, assembly, and so on).
But do they… Really?
Because these freedoms don’t exist unless they are protected.
If you truly value freedom (and the rights that go along with being free), then you must be willing to feel uncomfortable (sometimes, appalled or even triggered) by others. And you must be willing to speak up and protect those freedoms.
I am okay with that. Because freedom is truly a top value.
If you're wondering, “Why are you talking about this today? How does this relate to succeeding in both law and life?”
