Success Without Sacrifice

Anti-hustle strategies for lawyers who want

more control, more impact, more life.

He cut our electricity, slashed our tires, and waited outside with a gun. I was 9 years old. The man? My soon-to-be-ex-stepfather.

This memory is seared into my psyche.

I cannot forget it. And the thing is, I don’t want to forget it.

The things I witnessed and experienced (some of them just as bad as this one) made me into who I am today. It's part of why I became a lawyer.

And also, why freedom is one of my top values. More than fairness. More than equity. More than almost anything (other than family).

If you ask someone in the United States whether they value freedom, they’ll probably say “yes” (listing the “freedoms” of speech, worship, assembly, and so on).

But do they… Really?

Because these freedoms don’t exist unless they are protected.

If you truly value freedom (and the rights that go along with being free), then you must be willing to feel uncomfortable (sometimes, appalled or even triggered) by others. And you must be willing to speak up and protect those freedoms.

I am okay with that. Because freedom is truly a top value.

If you're wondering, “Why are you talking about this today? How does this relate to succeeding in both law and life?”

Simple:

TRUE SUCCESS

It's about who, not what.

Success — true success; the type that brings happiness and fulfillment — is less about what you have and more about who you are.

You can't truly be happy unless you act in accordance with who you want to be. It all comes down to this, Friend:

Who do you want to be, and what are you doing to BE that person?

I talk a lot about building a values-aligned law practice. Something you must know is this:

Values that cost you nothing probably aren't values — they're just words you aren't willing to stand behind.

TAKING A STAND

Who I want to be.

I was once asked to document a Sharia Law transaction. With a sizable fee on the line, I said no. (Given Sharia Law's unequal treatment of women, this violates my value of freedom).

Aligning to your values will cost you something (at some point). And it's worth it — because NOT aligning to your values costs something, too.

That's why I was immediately drawn to Ariella Cohen Coleman.

She's a lawyer who built a values-aligned law firm and a nonprofit to support the Jewish community. She speaks openly about antisemitism. Even if it makes others uncomfortable. Even though it could cost her something.

She is the real thing.

This conversation is about so much (seriously, there is something here for everyone):

  • What it actually takes to build a values-aligned business.

  • Wellbeing and mental health (and why it's related to peak performance).

  • Our responsibility (as a freedom-loving society) to combat antisemitism.

This conversation is powerful. It's important. And yes, we get into a topic that many deem off-limits. But I don't.

I want my boys to live in a world that values freedom for all, including Jews.

I sincerely hope that you will listen >>> here.

XO,

Heather
