I’ve always been a rule follower. I think it’s why I was (at least partly) attracted to the law. Unfortunately (and like most lawyers), it also had me waiting a lot...
Waiting to get noticed for my long hours and dedication.
Waiting for my turn to be promoted.
Waiting for the “right moment” to ask for business.
When you're told "it will come"(and also, don't feel comfortable asking for business because it's too "salesy"), it's tempting to wait.
But that's giving away too much power (to other people). Waiting means missed opportunities. And sometimes, getting passed right up.
I learned this the hard way, the first year I was eligible for partnership.
I went into my annual review expecting to hear that I would be put up that year. After all, I had the billables, a small book (rare amongst fellow associate attorneys), and stellar reviews.
Yet I was told I would NOT be put up (I had to wait at least another year). When I asked why, my advisor was surprised to hear I was already eligible. Talk about a complete facepalm moment.
That’s when I quit waiting.
What are you waiting for, Friend?
Instead of waiting, ask questions, position yourself, and make your case.
XO,
Heather
