The Open Source Questions IBM i Shops Stopped Having to Ask

Your generated estate can take a modern front end without reopening the model.

We take the three objections that used to end every open source conversation on IBM i and check them against the current evidence: a community-built IDE that now out-uses IBM’s own, a formal IBM support channel, and Python climbing the language charts on the platform.

The part for builders is how a REST layer or new web front end sits beside a CA 2E or CA Plex model while the generator never notices.

Heads Up

End of support for IBM i 7.4

IBM i 7.4 reached end of standard support on September 30. New features stopped back in April, standard PTFs are ending, and security fixes now arrive only through a paid Service Extension that runs to 2029.

Simon Hutchinson lays out what that costs: roughly 1.5 to 2 times your previous base software maintenance in year one, climbing toward 3 to 4 times after. If you are on Power9 or newer the path is 7.5 or 7.6. If you are on Power8 or older there is hardware in the conversation too.

Either way the first question is the same one as always, which is what you actually have running on that box.
