A Call for a Total Ban on Waste Dumping!

 

Last week, containers of mixed waste including plastic packaging and used face masks from the US were intercepted at a major port in the Philippines. #breakfreefromplastic members Ecowaste Coalition and Greenpeace Philippines are calling on the Philippine government to ratify the Basel Ban Amendment and enforce a total ban on dumping waste from one country to another! 

 

#breakfreefromplastic changemaker Aileen Lucero of EcoWaste Coalition said, “The ratification of the Basel Convention Ban Amendment and a total ban on waste importation will send a strong message that the Philippines is not a dumping ground, and that rich countries must take full responsibility for managing their waste instead of exporting them to other countries.”

As Environmenstrual Week 2020 draws to a close, #breakfreefromplastic member, Zero Waste Europe, presents The Bloody Manifesto. The European Commission must act to create a policy framework that empowers menstruators including access to safe and fair menstrual products. Let’s make sure the European Union’s circular economy objectives are reached!

Canada Moves to Regulate Plastic as Toxic, While US Industry Groups Resist

 

The Canadian government has proposed regulating plastic as a toxic substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. If successful in moving forward, Canada would ban many single-use plastic items by the end of 2021!


In response, US-led industry groups are claiming that Canada’s proposal would violate the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (or USMCA, also known as the “New NAFTA”).
