Countdown

TEDxPlasticPollutionCoalition

Yesterday, TEDxPlasticPollutionCoalition offered a digital series of presentations on plastic pollution and its connections to climate, justice, health, and equity — including a new TEDx Talk from #breakfreefromplastic changemaker Yvette Arellano.

"I knew plastic pollution could look like a bottle abandoned on the sidewalk, or an island of garbage in the ocean … I know now that plastic pollution can also look like fresh fallen snow coming out of wastewater discharge pipes; it can look like billowing plumes of black smoke coming out of refinery smokestacks, legally emitting cancer-causing benzene."

Speaking Truth to Power, from “Cancer Alley”

Sharon Lavigne from RISE St. James warns the entire US could soon become a “Cancer Alley” like her hometown: St. James Parish, Louisiana. Formosa Plastics Corporation plans to build a giant $9.4 billion complex that would more than double the area’s toxic air pollution, and more than triple exposure to cancer-causing chemicals.

The plastic industry is currently planning hundreds of other toxic plants around the world.

The Plastic Pandemic: A Reuters Special Report

A Reuters special report paints a bleak picture of how COVID-19 has impacted plastic waste prevention around the world.

The recycling industry is suffering from labor shortages and other effects of the pandemic. Meanwhile, virgin plastic—which is made out of fossil fuelshas become a cheaper alternative to recycled plastic due to historically-low oil prices. Not surprisingly, this has led fossil fuel companies to invest massively in new plastic production at the expense of waste management.
