Subject: Winning Without a Personal Best

Lee Hayward's Total Fitness Bodybuilding Tips
Hey Friend,

This past Sunday I participated in the Newfoundland Provincial Road Cycling Race. This was my third road race of the season. After finishing second in my division in the first two races, I'm happy to share that I won in the Weekend Warrior Category this time around.

But there's more to a race than the final placings on the podium. My main goal was to beat my personal best time from this same course two years ago. That didn't happen. My pace was slower and my power numbers just weren't where they were back then.

Two years ago I logged nearly 14,000 km on the bike, the highest volume of my cycling life, and it showed. This year, while I've still put in plenty of miles, the difference in training volume showed. By the second half of the race my energy tanked - even though I felt my nutrition and hydration were spot on - I just ran out of steam.

So while I didn't set a new PR, crossing the line first in my division was still a great feeling - and a reminder that you can learn a lot even when things don't go exactly as planned.

2025 Provincial Road Cycling Championships
I'm taking this race as motivation to train smarter and come back stronger next year.

As you're chasing your own goals - by that fitness, weight loss, muscle building, sports competition, or otherwise - remember that your progress will not always be linear. There will be ups, downs, set backs, and plenty of frustrations along the way.

But keep pushing forward because the journey is worth it. And when you do finally hit those personal bests, they will be so much more meaningful because of the struggles you went through to achieve them.
all the best,
