About the artist:

Virginia Lloyd-Tait began sculpting in 1994 with Tom Bass at his former studio in Broadway. Since then, Virginia has had the good fortune to experience the guidance of many teachers. While these teachers are too numerous to mention individually, they have all shared the same guiding principle: rather than being simply teachers, they are artists who help students and fellow artists develop and create their own vision.

Over the years, Virginia has completed three commissions. The first was a sculpture of Bill Woodfull, one of Australia’s cricket captains who led the Australian team during the 1932–33 Bodyline series. The sculpture now sits in Jubilee Park, Cootamundra, as part of Captains Walk, a collection featuring more than 20 Australian cricket captains sculpted by TBSSS artists. The Board of Sonic Healthcare commissioned a sculpture of its founding CEO, Dr Colin Goldschmidt. Virginia was later commissioned to sculpt a portrait of Bob Dylan for someone whose life had been profoundly affected by his music.

In 2018, Virginia began carving under the guidance of Usama Alnassar, attending his summer workshops at TBSSS over the past eight years, as well as workshops in Carrara, Italy.

Virginia is now fortunate to attend classes with Elena Murgia, who has taken on the mantle of continuing the marble carving tradition at Erskineville.

This exhibition is a 30-plus-year retrospective of the Virginia’s clay work and carvings.
