All are welcome at the Annual Studio Exhibition this Saturday 26 September!

Saturday 26 September, 3—5pm | Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, 1A Clara St Erskineville

Please join us to celebrate our wonderful creative community at the 51st Annual Studio Exhibition by TBSSS students and teachers!

The Annual Studio Exhibition features sculptures created over the past year, in our Term Workshops, Special Workshops, Life Study, and Studio Access Programs.

Short speeches and student prizes from 4pm. When visiting the exhibition, don't forget to vote for your favourite sculpture in our People's Choice Award! PCA will be announced online 1 October.

All welcome to the opening, please bring a drink to share.

Exhibition continues until Wed 30 September, opening hours Sun 27 September 10am—4pm, Mon—Wed 10am—2pm.

Upcoming Term and Special Workshops at TBSSS

Term 4 Open Workshops

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, from 12 October | 10 weeks | AM/PM/EVE 3 hour workshops

Sessions are filling up for Term 4 Open Workshops, starting from 12 October!

Our workshops are open to all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced sculptors. Classes are mixed ability, with students working on different projects and at different stages of their development.

Our atelier-style studio brings together students of all experience levels, creating a supportive environment for learning, observation and shared practice.

Our purpose-built studio is a welcoming place to explore sculpture — a friendly, supportive environment where you can learn, experiment and develop your own work.

Life Drawing for Sculptors with Simon Harris

Saturday PM, 24 October—5 December* | 6 weeks | 2:30—5:30pm

This 6-week life drawing course focuses on learning to see and draw the human figure as a three-dimensional, sculptural form. Working from a live model each week, sessions combine guided demonstrations, short warm-up studies and longer poses, with optional group critique.

Through a structured progression covering gesture, proportion, light, anatomy and spatial depth, students strengthen observational drawing skills and spatial awareness, culminating in a sustained final figure study that supports and enriches sculptural practice.

*There will be no class on 7 November—this is a 6-week course over 7 weeks.

Sculpture in a Day: Carving Soapstone with Karen Alexander

Sunday, 25 October | 1 day | 10am—4pm

Create a small, finished soapstone sculpture in this one-day workshop. Soapstone is a soft, easily carved stone with beautiful natural patterns, available in a variety of colours. You’ll be guided in using rasps and files to gradually reveal the hidden organic shapes and forms within—resulting in your very own unique sculpture to take home.

A fun, creative and meditative one-day experience—perfect for those short on time, or a great taste tester for anyone curious about carving in stone.

8 Week Stone Carving with Elena Murgia

Monday EVE, 26 October—14 December | 8 weeks | 6—9pm

Carving is a magical process that pursues the soothing of the soul and detaches ourselves from the modern chaotic life. It’s a way to connect to nature and it informs a sense of space, training the eye and the mind to see in depth!

Learn how to remove step by step the material that is surrounding a sculpture, starting from unveiling the basic volumes connected together in harmonious composition and the beginnings of the finishing process where time permits.

Tickets selling fast for the Tom Bass Retrospective Film Night on Thursday 15 October

Thursday 15 October 2026, 6:30pm—9:30pm | PACT Centre for Emerging Artists

All are invited to this special retrospective screening night of three short films celebrating the work and legacy of Tom Bass AM (1916–2010), one of Australia's most significant and influential sculptors known for his large public works and dedication to art education, and the founder of the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School.

Join us at PACT Centre for Emerging Artists in Erskineville, around the corner from the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, for this special film screening event, with a small exhibition of Tom Bass' work in the foyer. Refreshments will be available to purchase at the theatre bar.

The short film screening will start at 7:30pm, with a program of three films.

The Sculptors Society's upcoming Annie Wyatt Exhibition

The Sculptors Society's latest show, the Annie Wyatt Exhibition, is open this weekend in the Annie Wyatt room on Observatory Hill and features members of the TBSSS community including Nicky McGinn, Martin Williams, and Jutka Freiman. Congratulations to all!

Congratulations to Elena Murgia on winning the Excellence in Stone Sculpture Prize at Wollombi

Congratulations to TBSSS stone carving teacher Elena Murgia for winning the Excellence in Stone Sculpture Prize for her sculpture Gio (pictured above) at the Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival! Our studio community is well represented at the festival, which is running until 27 September in Wollombi.

Congratulations to Simon Harris on winning the First Prize in Drawing in Willoughby Art Centre’s Ewart Prize

Congratulations to TBSSS drawing teacher Simon Harris for winning the First Prize in Drawing at the annual Ewart Art Prize for his drawing Precarious (pictured above)! The exhibition is on at Willoughby Arts Centre until 2 October.
