The life cycle of the Cicadas is truly amazing. They spend six or seven years underground before emerging and live for only a few weeks.

The female will lay eggs on a tree and die. The male, having fulfilled his lifecycle, will also die. The eggs hatch and the nymphs fall and burrow into the ground and the cycle begins again. While underground, the nymphs do not hibernate. They actively feed while underground.

The nerve centre of the restored Signal Box at Katoomba Station

The Signal Box, would have operated 24/7 and it's hard to imagine the pressure the operator would have been under with each operation, 100's of lives depended on it.

The Single Box is a rare example of a timber on-platform signal box.
