ADFF:ONLINE Session 2 – April 17-28

This session features two complementary films about Ludwig Mies van der Rohe– one film about his personal life and one about his vast achievements as an architect.

The Mies van der Rohes

2023 / 80 min / Switzerland

Director: Sabine Gisiger

The first film, The Mies van der Rohes, is from our 2023/24 season. This film tells the story of Mies' personal life from the point of view of the women in his life. Director Sabine Gisiger was initially inspired by the 2001 auto-biography of Mies' eldest daughter, Georgia. Drawing on her background as a historian, Gisiger went on to do 3 years of research and uncovered a private archive of footage, photos, and documents. In The Mies van der Rohes, Gisiger retells the story of this iconic architect from a female perspective.

Regular or Super: Views on Mies van der Rohe

2004 / 56 min / Canada

Director: Joseph Hillel

Can a gas station be considered art? It can if it's designed by Mies van der Rohe. The second film in our Mies series is a 20th-anniversary screening of Regular or Super. This film starts with one of Mies' last commissions, a gas station in Montreal. Best known for his minimalist designs, Mies was obsessed with purity and simplicity. In Regular or Super, we gain insights from renowned thinkers like Stanley Tigerman, Rem Koolhaus, and Phyllis Lambert. Exploring many of Mies' buildings with a cinematic eye and a jazzy soundtrack, Regular or Super is as powerful today as it was when originally released.

ADFF at Design Victoria
