Last night we opened ADFF:Toronto with the world premiere of Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines. The Toronto audience was out in full force for a great night of film and fun. Here are a few photos from last night:

The opening night film was presented by Neinkamper. Here are the film's directors Danny Berish and Ryan Mah (far left and far right) with producer Leah Mallen and Beatrix Nienkamper, Klaus Nienkamper, and Rebecca Nienkamper.

Introducing the festival were Gareth Brennan (Eventscape CEO), Bridgett Shim (Shim-Sutcliffe Architects), Joel Leon (Toronto Society of Architects, Executive Director), and Kyle Bergman (ADFF Director). Onstage, Eventscape presented Kyle with a classic Canadian Dinner Jacket.

6:00pm | Schindler Space Architect


R.M. Schindler laid the foundation for indoor/outdoor living. Narrated by Meryl Streep, Schindler Space Architect asks key questions about the importance of domestic architecture in creating national culture and shaping humanity.


This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Anne-Marie Armstrong, Kfir Gluzberg, and Dave LeBlanc.

6:15pm | Stardust: The Story of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown


A tragi-comic road movie unfolds across continents as two influential architect spouses–Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi–look back to the events and buildings that inspired a partnership and love affair of over half a century. 


This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Director Jim Venturi.

8:45pm | The Pavilion on the Water


A cinematic journey into the world of Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa and his passion for Japanese culture, through the words of philosopher Ryosuke Ōhashi. 

9:00pm | DEPOT – Reflecting Boijmans


The happy story of the world’s first museum depot entirely open to visitors– a shared vision of architect Winy Maas, a founding partner of MVRDV, and Sjarel Ex, the Boijmans Museum executive director.
