June, 15 2026

The days are getting longer and summer is almost here. ADFF Summer is focused on previewing new films for our next season. Each year, ADFF receives submissions from filmmakers around the world capturing the stories of the built environment and we are looking for the next ones. The deadline to submit films is July 15th. To submit a film, use this link.

Stay tuned for the next newsletter, where we will announce the 2026/27 season cities and festival dates.

July 16 - Hornby Island, Vancouver - Special Screenings

ADFF and the Hornby Island Arts Center, designed by D’Arcy Jones, are hosting a special screening of Allie Rood’s film Prickly Mountain and My Design/Build Life.

Like Prickly Mountain, Hornby Island has a rich and creative design/build architecture scene that began in the 1960s and ’70s and continues today. In the early years, the island was known for its many hand-built houses. Today, that legacy continues through beautifully crafted homes with a strong focus on design, sustainability, and a deep connection to the landscape.

If you're on Hornby Island on July 16th, come join us for a screening and discussion with Architects Bo Helliwell, Michael McNamara and Kyle Bergman, moderated by Adel Weder

Between Heaven and Earth

In 2019, ADFF screened Marianne Gerdes' film Between Heaven and Earth, a portrait of artist and architect James Hubbell. One of the film's central subjects is Ilan-Lael, Hubbell's extraordinary property in Julian, California, featuring 15 handcrafted buildings and numerous site-specific art installations created over more than 60 years.

The property was recently included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios (HAHS) network. This places Hubbell's home alongside the preserved homes and studios of renowned artists and designers, including Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Russel Wright, and Sam Maloof.

Kyle Bergman and Ruth Somalo at ADFF:NY 2025

A special shout-out to Ruth Somalo, who has been ADFF's Senior Film Programmer for more than a decade. Ruth continues her important work with ADFF while taking on a new programming job.

Ruth was recently appointed Premiere Programming Consultant at the prestigious Film Forum in New York. We are thrilled to see her talents recognized by one of the most respected independent cinemas in the world. The insight, passion, and curatorial excellence that have helped shape ADFF's programming for so many years will now also benefit Film Forum.

Congratulations, Ruth!
