Great news about last season's opening night film!

ADFF is thrilled to announce that our opening night film from last season — MAU — will have its theatrical release on May 13th at the Angelika Film Center in New York City. The film will launch during NYCxDESIGN, a ten-day festival showcasing the best of New York City design. After the NY theatrical run, MAU will be heading to additional cities across North America, including Toronto, Los Angeles and Chicago. The film will also be available on iTunes and Amazon Prime starting June 7th.

MAU is a compelling and uplifting film that speaks about the power of design, leaving the audience thinking about how they could design their own lives. It's a must-see film for everyone.

Following the May 13th, 7:30 screening at the Angelika, a conversation will be led by Architect Bjarke Ingels, with Bruce Mau, Bisi Williams, and the film’s directors Jono and Benji Bergmann. It's an exciting event not to be missed. For tickets and showtimes, click here.

The Films

High Maintenance - The Life and Work of Dani Karavan

2020 / 66 min / Israel

Israeli artist Dani Karavan has created nearly 100 environmental installations across the world. He has won some of the most prestigious international art awards and is constantly asked to speak or lecture about his groundbreaking work. Yet Karavan is far from satisfied. His monumental structures are rapidly deteriorating. His advanced age is starting to catch up with him. The political climate in his country is driving him mad, as does the film’s director, whose questions betray his infuriating artistic ignorance.

Small Town Big Canvas: An Indiana, PA Story

2021 / 26 min / USA

Dripped On The Road, a traveling artist residency program, paints 14 murals in two weeks in Indiana, Pennsylvania during the Covid-19 pandemic. The project transforms the town’s visual landscape while paying homage to its local history and focusing on creative sustainability. The town accepts four artists and three program directors with open, socially-distant arms, creating a heart-warming and quirky story that demonstrates the importance, power and impact of public art and community identity. In a time of crisis, uncertainty and division, the arts are a catalyst for breaking down barriers and uniting people from all walks of life.

The Speakers

Suchi Reddy founded Reddymade Architecture and Design in 2002 with a human-centric approach to design. The guiding principle of the practice is “form follows feeling,” a design ethos informed by neuroaesthetics, the study of how the brain responds to the design of our surroundings. The strong belief that good design, calibrated carefully to the human, positively influence wellbeing, creativity, and productivity informs all projects from conception to details.

Katie Merz has elevated simple, cartoon-like line-art to a level of social documentation and commentary that transcends the best street artists of the past 35 years. Her signature-styled, densely-packed glyph patterns create complex, non-linear narratives that can cover a sneaker or a building with equal effectiveness, and conjure up long stories about what makes a place.

Evan Lovett started tattooing at the young age of 15 and has been professionally tattooing since 2002. He is known for his large-scale, fully rendered free-hand designs. Over the years he combined his love for the two and has built a body of public art in the form of murals that can be seen from coast to coast as well as internationally. What sparked his love for murals and public art came from years of painting graffiti when he was younger.
