Subject: A great start to 2025!

January 15, 2025

We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and the first two weeks of 2025. We started our new year with the launch of ADFF:MUMBAI January 10-12. Martino Stierli, MoMA's Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, joined us for opening night. We offered over 30 screenings and 10 talks as part of the ~log(ue) series, as well as eight custom pavilions designed by leading architects in India. See the photos at the end of this newsletter to get a sense of ADFF:MUMBAI.

ADFF and Grace Frames are once again showing films in their amazing building, designed by SANNA. In the past, we've shown just one film at a time. For Humanity in Architecture, we have 11 films activating the entire Grace Farms campus:

Beyond Zero

Biocentrics

Charlotte Perriand, Pioneer in the Art of Living

Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf

Frank Gehry: Building Justice

Moriyama-san

Perception

Sitting Still

Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island

Tokyo Ride

Unfinished Spaces

Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island

The only film screening on Friday night will be followed by a conversation with Zita Cobb and Sharon Price about how architecture can create spaces to promote social good. Zita was the driving force behind the reimagining of the Fogo Island Inn and Sharon is the driving force behind Grace Farms. ADFF director Kyle Bergman will moderate the conversation. The film will be introduced by production designer Jane Musky.

ADFF:CHICAGO will take place January 29 & 30 at the Chicago Cultural Center and January 31 - February 2 at the Gene Siskel Film Center. We've got a lineup of 11 incredible films with amazing speakers. Below are some festival highlights.

Director Jim Venturi with Martin Filler (Architectural Historian & Critic) and Gabrielle Esperdy (Dean, Hillier College of Architecture and Design) at ADFF:NY.

Stardust: The Story of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown

Co-directors Danny Berish and Ryan Mah with producer Leah Mallen and Beatrix Nienkamper, Klaus Nienkamper, and Rebecca Nienkamper at ADFF:Toronto.

Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines

Jan 30 at 6:30 | Chicago Premiere

Directors: Danny Berish and Ryan Mah

Enjoy an in-depth exploration into the extraordinary life of one of the 20th century's most iconic modernist architects. The documentary weaves personal anecdotes and professional milestones to uncover the untold stories of Erickson’s journey, from his celebrated public achievements to his private struggles. Known for his visionary designs and groundbreaking architectural philosophy, Erickson’s work profoundly shaped the modern landscape, but behind the accolades is a complex individual grappling with triumphs and tragedies.

After the film, co-director Ryan Mah and producer Leah Mallen will be in the cinema for a Q&A.

This program is co-produced by Nienkamper.

Gina Angelone and Laurie Olin at ADFF:NY.

Sitting Still

Feb 1 at 5:30 | Chicago Premiere

Director: Gina Angelone

This portrait of Laurie Olin reveals an irreverent urban warrior and his profoundly social vision. It’s a story of an artist and the concerns that defined his life’s work: urbanization, a lost connection to nature, economic marginalization, and the grave necessity of humanity in design.

Laurie Olin is Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and recipient of the 2012 National Medal of Arts from President Obama.

Yael Melamede with architect Moshe Safdie at ADFF:NY.

Ada – My Mother the Architect

Feb 2 at 5:00 | Chicago Premiere

Director: Yael Melamede

Ada Karmi Melamede is one of the most accomplished female architects in the world, but very little is known about her outside her home country of Israel.

Ada is a true pioneer who, like many successful working mothers of her time, was forced to make impossible choices. Ada - My Mother the Architect profiles a woman and artist deeply tested by the realities of career and motherhood, a unique mother-daughter bond, and a fragile nation grappling with unrealized dreams.
