Subject: Eek! I Broke My Blog...

Hi there!

Sally Lazarus here...

First of all, if you bought WP Security Decoded I must apologise if you got a repeat of an email from Bobby and I earlier today... I cued up a follow-up message to go out to new subscribers and Aweber decided it would be fun to send it to everyone... Doh!

How's your week going? Mine has been a little slow, mainly due to the presence of a bright shiny thing in the sky...

I found it a little scary at first, but later realised that I actually liked the light and warmth that said shiny thing provided...

So I've been using any excuse to get out in it. I even washed the car yesterday. By hand! I think the last time I did that was when I was 8 years old and washing my Dad's car (rather badly it has to be said!). Lol!

A couple of months back I was editing one of the core php files on one of my WordPress sites but wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing...

And I did it WRONG!!!

I only realised when I tried to load my site and there was an error. My heart froze... what had I done? =:-O

It's fine I thought, I'll just change the file back to how it was, but when I tried to go back to my WordPress dashboard that was broken too! Eek!

I was effectively locked out of my site and any customers who came along would see the error page. I'd look like a numpty and those customers may never return...

After panicking for a bit I tried the back button...

Luckily the file editor window was still there...

Although I couldn't edit it directly I was able to copy the php and paste it into a text document. Then I was able to find the problem, correct it and upload the file via FTP, overwriting the broken one...

Phew!

Have you ever broken your site? It's easy enough to do...

Even a seemingly simple change can do it...

You install a new plugin and it clashes with something and before you know it you're in trouble...

Even if you don't end up locked out of your site it can make it misbehave or even break completely...

Is that going to create a good impression with your visitors? Probably not...

And in the meantime you're left in a frenzy of trying to work out how to fix it, knowing that all the time you're losing visitors who may never return!

Is there a solution? You bet there is :)

WP Simulator allows you to test any change you make to your site on your own computer, so any problems and they will only be visible to you so there's no panic to get it fixed quickly.

This is the same system used by the pros to build their sites.

But, without WP Simulator, "localhost" can be a little daunting to set up. You need to do some pretty techie stuff and a lot of it...

Even though I'm generally pretty comfortable with technical stuff it still gave me pause for thought...

But with WP Simulator you can be up and running in 10 minutes :)

So if you'd like to save the heartache of breaking your site in the future, check out WP Simulator below:
