“Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go.”--Natalie Goldberg
Your Scars, Your Story

All I knew of Daddy was his dying. My part in the story had been to go along for the ride. “I pushed you in the stroller,” Mother told me, “and when I came home from the grocery store, he was dead.” I was seven now and the stroller story wasn’t large enough to hold an entire father.

I knew other children with breathing fathers, fathers who came home after work and attended second grade pageants.

The above story is about the father I never knew, whose story I longed for and yet rejected.

I’m wondering: What stories might you be rejecting?

Maybe you think they’re too painful to work with, or even to remember.

When I call up the pain of a story, own it, and create with it, there’s an incredible transformation that happens . . . but I didn’t always feel this way.

Wildfire Writer Edee Lemonier (who had her first acceptance for publication last week – yay!) recently talked about this process. She said, “Looking at my own story and saying ‘the narrator’ is the greatest gift I’ve ever received.”

Telling her story helped Edee find distance and healing. It also makes for beautiful, powerful writing.

I invite you to look at your dark places, enter them from the place of Story, and watch as the light pours in.
