Community Blossoms
It's no doubt that Wilbur has a knack for attracting some astounding and talented people. Nearly everyday, a talented musician picks up an instrument and captures the room, many times drawing a small crowd. This winter has been a time to tune in and take note of the talent already blessing our walls. As we move into spring, we are excited to continue elevating community members in new and meaningful ways.

So far, we've been able to host a Winter Wellness workshop with herbalist, and long time community member Christopher Hobbs; as well as a Medicinal Chocolate Making workshop with Anya and Erica, long time Wilbur guests. Both events were highly successful in bringing together the guest community, allowing for learning and sharing from all sides, creating truly beautiful spaces. With plenty of Music in-between, February was a successful month filled with community gathering and growth.

Although we are starting to see warmer days, cold weather is still sneaking in. You can expect to see musical performers Friday and Saturday nights through March. As the warmer weather sets in, we plan to begin offering yoga again in April. Be sure to take a look at our Special Events Calendar so you don't miss out on your favorite program.

Restoring the Watershed
In February, 2023, we invited Kevin Swift of Swift Water Design to install a number of Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) in two of our tributary streams that feed Sulphur Creek. The main purpose of putting in these BDAs is to slow the storm water down as it flows into the main creek, reducing sediment in the streams and, more importantly, keeping the water on the land longer. This creates marshy plains that allow water to saturate down further into the soils, improving soil health, the growth of several native species of grasses and reeds, and supplying greater areas of riparian habitat for all the insects, birds, amphibians, and mammals we love to see gathering. The picture above from February 2024, shows how the dams have spread the water out onto the flat areas in lower parts of the tributary.

Our plan is to continue placing BDAs in tributaries throughout the nature preserve. In the coming weeks, we will be sending out communication to those already signed up regarding upcoming chances to learn about and install BDAs in the Sulphur Creek watershed. Join our Work Trade List to stay up to date on these exciting opportunities.

The winter rains bring with them massive change to the landscape. The creek swells to a river, the hillsides turn a lush green, and at long last, flowers start to bloom, indicating spring is around the corner. We've started to see some pops of yellow buttercups and even a poppy was blooming on the sunniest of days last week, indicating wildflower season is about to begin. If you've ever had the privilege of seeing Wilbur in the heart of wildflower season, you know it's something you won't want to miss.

California Naturalist Course
Wilbur Hot Springs is hosting its fourth annual California Naturalist Course, taught by our friends at Tuleyome. Developed by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, the program is designed to introduce its students to the wonders of California’s unique ecology and engage the public in study and stewardship of California’s natural communities. The California Naturalist programs uses science curriculum, hands-on learning, problem-solving, participatory science, and community service to instill a deep appreciation for the natural communities of the state and to inspire individuals to become stewards of their local resources. The classes will be held at Wilbur Hot Springs, beginning the evening of Sunday, April 14, 2024 through Friday, April 19, 2024. Call or email us to arrange your stay at Wilbur while you take part in this eye-opening course: 530-777-2306 or frontdesk@wilburhotsprings.com.

In Loving Memory
March 29, 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of the fire that burned down the second and third stories of the historic hotel. This day will be forever remembered by the many of you who were either here or had favorite rooms in the upper levels of the hotel, including Dr. Richard Miller, who was onsite during the fire, celebrating his birthday with his Wilbur family and community.

Ten years later, the lower story of the hotel remains and, though we all still talk regularly about that fire, Wilbur’s community of guests, both long-time and newly found, continue to gather together to chat with the team at the Front Desk, listen to someone playing the piano in the Community Room, and, of course, prepare meals in our big community kitchen. We invite you to take a moment today to be thankful that everyone involved that terrifying day made it home safely and that the soul of Wilbur Hot Springs persevered, managing to spring back in a slightly different physical form.
