"Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." — Henry James
Magic Mornings, Endless Evenings: Summer at Wilbur
Greetings from sun bathed Wilbur Hot Springs! We are enjoying a seasonably warm summer so far, with afternoon temperatures hovering in the 90s, which is quite a bit more comfortable than summers past. Summer season visitors have cultivated a practice that mirrors the wildlife and adapts well to the warmer temperatures, bathing in the mornings and evenings, when the temperatures are more comfortable, reading and enjoying indoor activities during the heat of the day, with perhaps a splash in the pool to cool off. This is a wonderful prescription for a grounding and relaxing summer getaway!
Speaking of wildlife, you might notice more activity than readily meets the eye, especially during the twilight hours around dawn and dusk. Although many animals are not active during the heat of the day, birds and other creatures are especially active in the early morning and late evening when the air is significantly cooler. Summer is a great time to watch hundreds of bats coming out of the bat cave, damselflies buzzing in droves throughout the valley, black tailed deer grazing the hills, the busks in velvet and fawns trying their legs, blackbirds flying in unison, ravens in pairs and raptors hunting on the air currents above the hills.
There is truly nothing quite like a summer evening at Wilbur. We hope this season brings you a moment to pause, breathe, and restore. Our medicinal pools—and the wildlife—are waiting for you, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the waters very soon!
A Call to the Wilbur Community
This past month has seen 2 destructive fires impacting dear members of the Wilbur Extended Community. Below are short descriptions – please donate if you feel moved to do so.
On June 25th, David Armstrong, one of Wilbur’s beloved healing arts contractors for many years, woke to find his home in Yuba City on fire. David, Melissa, their teenage sons Auggy and Mikey, and their beloved black lab Lucky all made it out safely, but everything else was lost. Many of you who have worked with David over the years know that he is a consummate healing artist, always there to help when we need it most. Now, David and his family need our help to rebuild. If you feel compelled, please visit their GoFundMe page and donate anything you can.
On June 29th, a fire badly damaged The Mill, a coffee house and flour mill in San Francisco. The Mill’s partners, Josey Baker, Jodi Geren and Tal Moore are longtime Wilbur guests and have generously supported us over the last few years, nourishing the Wilbur Team with amazing pizza they made in Wilbur’s bread oven. If you would like to help The Mill clean up, repair and rebuild, please visit their GoFundMe page and give what you are able. |
| | | Sweeping winds through Wilbur Hot Springs led to an incredible surprise over Memorial Day Weekend... six juvenile Northern Pygmy-Owls displaced from their home! Here's what happened: - A fire from years past hollowed out a tree on the west side of the hotel, which created a safe nursery for the owlets to grow up protected inside the trunk.
- Serious wind gusts in late May caused the weakened tree to crack in half, crashing down on the side of the hotel and leaving the half dozen tiny Northern Pygmy-Owls scattered on the ground.
- Wilbur staff and guests quickly sprung into action, with Jen "JR" Rold safely gathering and housing the owls before contacting the Hamilton Raptor Center in Penn Valley to determine the best plan for our new neighbors.
After about a month at the Raptor Center, the owls were cleared for lift-off in late June and returned to Wilbur where they were released in full health to roam free above the pools, property and Nature Preserve once again. The owls' journey reminds us of how many living creatures creatively share space in nature, and how co-operation amongst species can lead to beautiful results.
Work Trade for Stewardship has taken a pause for the summer months. If you are curious about participating in the program, be sure to join our Stewardship List today!
