| Fire Season is upon us early this year. This summer, dry and windy conditions on June 17 resulted in the Sites Fire, which burned almost 20,000 acres in Bear Valley before being contained. The fire spread very rapidly and was headed directly towards Wilbur when the heroic efforts of the firefighters stopped southward progress late on that same Monday night. Our deep gratitude goes out to the more than 2,500 fire and emergency personnel who worked tirelessly for over a week to contain the fire. Gladly, the fire is no longer a threat and the Wilbur sky is clear of smoke.
This close call has reminded us that summertime demands our respect on many levels, beginning with respect for the awesome power of wildfire, which reminds us to use fire very carefully, and only in safe, designated spaces. This time of year, our natural cold springs recede, reminding us to appreciate and conserve our precious water supply so that it will last until the winter rains. And, as the smoke cleared, it invited us to breathe deeply in gratitude.
"As the sun peeks over the mountain, it’s a new day on our miraculous planet. Reason alone for celebration.” Oprah Winfrey
If the summer heat teaches us anything, it shows us the importance of listening to our bodies and knowing when to rest. It instructs us to look out for others, to ensure everyone is taking proper care during the dry, hot days. And it instills patience, so that carefully managing the work of the day, we are rewarded with long, lovely evenings and peaceful cool mornings this summer season. May we all be listening to Summer, heeding its message of care and respect for ourselves and all beings.
Join us on the Yoga Deck this summer for various yoga, movement, and meditation programs. We humbly thank each of our programmers for giving their time to Wilbur community. Check out our special events page to stay up to date on our latest offerings.
Stay cool, and we hope to see you soon.

| | | Trail creation has begun! By winter this year, we aim to have a new trail completed and ready for guest use. The new trail will start at the long term parking lot and ascend the hill across the creek, connecting with the existing trail network in the central section of the preserve. We hope that our guests will enjoy having access to a new route of exploration in the hills overlooking Sulphur Creek. We are extremely grateful for the community members continuing to participate during these summer months to help maintain progress on this project! The hot weather means we take advantage of cooler morning temperatures, starting early and ending before the heat becomes too dangerous. A cold shower and a dip in the pool is always a satisfying end to a good day’s work outside.
Plenty of stewardship dates are planned this season - if you are interested in being involved, or would like to stay current on what’s happening, please join our Stewardship Work-Trade List.
