Dear Friend,
Today is World Refugee Day — and the theme for this year is Community as a Superpower. This week, we invite you to read the story of Monica, a returnee in South Sudan who fled violence not once but twice before finding community and healing in a Savings Group.
Displacement strips people not only of their homes but also of the networks of support that give life meaning — family, church, friends, neighbors, and the shared rhythms of daily life. In the face of such loss, finding or forming a new community becomes vital, and for refugees and returnees, community is often the first step toward healing and rebuilding.
Community offers more than just companionship — it provides emotional support, safety, shared resources, and a sense of place and belonging. For many, it becomes a space to regain dignity, rediscover purpose, renew hope in God’s presence and goodness, and begin again. Through solidarity and collective action, especially in groups like Savings Groups, refugees and returnees can share knowledge, lift each other up, and create new opportunities.
For Monica, being welcomed into a community of women with similar experiences was transformative. It turned isolation into connection, vulnerability into strength, and uncertainty into opportunity. In the aftermath of displacement, community is not just a support system — it’s a foundation for hope. We hope you’ll take some time today to read her story as well as get outside your comfort zone to create community wherever you are. Together, let’s nurture joy, spark connection, and practice community as a superpower 💫
