VPH APRIL NEWSLETTER
Dear VPHi members and enthusiasts, 
we hope you continue to do well and have found a new rhythm in these challenging times. 
The effects of COVID are visible everywhere, and communities are rallying together to make a contribution anyway they can, from developing a vaccine, over 3D printing face masks and ventilators, to studying the socio-economic effects. 
 In this issue of the newsletter we have gathered (information on) testimonials of the use of in silico to fight COVID, information on the effects of COVID on planned regulations and databases containing all references to COVID special funding calls. 
If you know of other sources or examples of in silico models being used, please let us know.
If you have not done so already, please consider joining one of the VPHi/Avicenna Alliance working groups and make your voice heard!

POLICY NEWS
In the "Regulatory Science Strategy to 2025", the European Medicine Agency included specific recommendation to optimise the capabilities of modelling and simulation in the drug development process.
On 25 March 2020, the European Commission launched the initiative AI-ROBOTICS vs COVID-19 with the aim to collect ideas about deployable artificial intelligence and robotic solutions as well as information on other initiatives that could help face the ongoing COVID-19 crisis
The European Commission plans to publish a roadmap for a new Pharmaceutical Strategy in the coming days, which will pave the way for the planned Pharmaceutical Strategy due in the last quarter of 2020.
On 3 April 2020, the European Commission has adopted a proposal to postpone by one year the date of application of the Medical Devices Regulation to allow Member States, health institutions and economic operators to prioritise the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
On 1 April 2020 the European Commission launched a Roadmap on DGPR and opened it to the feedback of stakeholders whose input will ultimately feed into the Commission’s report. For those interested to contribute the deadline is 29 April 2020.
VPH COMMUNITY
A commentary paper has recently been published in "CPT: Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology" reporting the outcome of a multistakeholder workshop on the validation challenges for in silico models in drug development. The event was organized on 25 - 26 April 2019 in (Leuven) Belgium in collaboration with the VPH Institute.
In order to be able to promptly contribute to the current crisis, VPHi is looking for individuals that have expertise useful in combatting the COVID-19 challenge.
A dedicated page on "In Silico World" collects all initiatives of the In Silico community toward the fight against coronavirus.
Frontiers is dedicating part of its open science platform infrastructure to collect and disseminate information relevant to the research communities battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
Repository for the molecular structures related with Corona virus and their re-processing
The Exscalate4CoV project is using the most powerful computing resources currently based in Europe to empower smart in-silico drug design.
Released openCARP, an open cardiac electrophysiology simulator for in-silico experiments.
The VPH Institute and in silico-related companies (software, medical devices & pharma) are working together under the umbrella of the Avicenna Alliance on a number of activities from policy to engagement and research with the common goal to facilitate the adoption of in silico medicine. This year we have a number of new working groups open to all VPHi members, sign up to give your contribute!
