Things have really changed since last spring, but that hasn't stopped many of our community and parent volunteers! It's amazing how folks keep finding new and creative ways to support our students, teachers and schools. But let's be honest. During such challenging times, it can be really difficult to feel successful. Many things that typically motivate us simply aren't a part of our daily life anymore. A friendly smile, a pat on the back, visits with friends, or a warm hug.

Now more than ever, it is important to lift one another up, share our successes, and celebrate more than just survival. Here's a strategy to spotlight volunteerism:

  • Remember to report your volunteer service, and encourage others to do the same. All virtual activities supporting school and student achievement counts.  Review ideas by clicking this link.

  • As soon as you engage in a school activity – like a PTA meeting – sign-on and report it.  Over time we intent to forget all the little things that can really add up.

  • Submit nominations for the 2021 ViPS Awards. You have seen all of those 'do-gooders' masked and running around. They've been distributing Grab & Go Meals, delivering water, donating supplies, tutoring over Zoom, running virtual meetings, writing grants . . . . whatever needs to be done. A nomination is a lovely way to say thank you. This online form makes it easy.

  • Remember to share your successes. Send updates and photos to us. We are always anxious to celebrate YOU!

Help Make Futures Bright

Bright Futures is a program that operates under the belief that when a community invests its time, talent, and treasure into its schools, students are more likely to reach goals for the future.

The process is simple. When a school identifies qualifying needs, those needs are advertised on the Bright Futures Little Rock Facebook page giving the entire community opportunity to help a student or family.

In partnership with Goodwill Industries, the City of Little Rock and LRSD, Bright Futures provides a path to channel resources. Join us!

OH MY!

We have learned that many of our readers did not receive some of our most recent e-blasts due to district-wide server issues.

SAY WHAT??

We had a lot of great news to share, so here is an instant replay in case you missed out.

Gotta love technology, right?

A few brave performers ZOOMED their way into LRSD elementary classrooms during ViPS Reading Day to remind students just how fun it is to discover a new book and share it with others. (Right-to-left) Kathleen Pate performed as Lady Liberty during her reading of My Left Foot. Superintendent Mike Poore shared Have You Filled a Bucket Today? with students on their feet in response. The wacky and fun Amelia Bedelia was introduced by Deborah Baldwin and Jim Metzger. Even Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. shared his thoughts on reading, encouraging students to find something that excites them and read, read, read!

With volunteer readers unable to visit classrooms this year, ViPS focused on building classroom libraries. Well over 1,200 new books were donated by loyal friends and donors! Many wrote personal notes sharing their love for reading and encouraging students to increase the time they spend reading each day. Leigh Cooper, a teacher from Jefferson Elementary, expressed her gratitude: "ViPS Reading Day has always been a favorite day at our school. Thank you for making this year's Reading Day so special during these challenging times."

Well said Ms. Cooper!

THANK YOU KROGER!  Central Arkansas Kroger stores recently donated over $11,000 worth of school supplies to the Little Rock School District.  ViPS staff was proud to sort the supplies and repackage items for distribution to schools. Over twenty school representatives responded to the December drive through pick-up to secure supplies for their campuses. Kroger is also a big supporter of the Poore Man on the Roof project.
