Helpful Hints

Alternative Facilitator/Zoom Accounts:

  • Before we can add a permanent alternative host to your Zoom meeting they will need  a SMART Zoom account, which can be requested HERE.

  • Alternative facilitators for your meeting who will be filling in more than 3 times will need to register as a co-facilitator for your meeting through VolunteerHQ by logging in and submitting a face-to-face or local online meeting registration form for an existing meeting.

  • When filling out this form in VolunteerHQ, they can choose how they want their name listed on the meeting list. If they do not want their name added they can just put “none” and add a note under special instructions that they do not want it to be added as they are only an alternate for when you are not available.

  • If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out.

If you are adding an alternative facilitator that will only be filling in one or two times for your meeting, they will not need to fill out a face-to-face or local online meeting registration form. To add a few time substitute please fill out the form located HERE.

Meetings of Interest for Volunteers

SMART 4 Volunteers (S4V)

SMART 4 VOLUNTEERS (S4V) is a private SMART Recovery meeting for our volunteers.  While volunteering, people need to take time to focus on themselves. This meeting has a different purpose than the SMART Meeting Management (SMM) meetings.

This group meets on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. till 6:00 p.m. ET. and is facilitated by Jasper2016.

Guest Blog by Tom Horvath

Stanton Peele’s latest book, A Scientific Life on the Edge: My Lonely Quest to Change How We See Addiction, (#14) is a personal autobiography, an intellectual autobiography, and a detailed comparison of his work with that of many other authors and scientists, including Maia Szalavitz, Carl Hart, Marc Lewis, and Johann Hari. For those unfamiliar with Peele’s work, this book would be an excellent introduction. If you already appreciate him, the historical and comprehensive nature of this book (379 pages, plus 52 pages of online references) will likely be appealing. The references online are helpful and save the reader from flipping pages back and forth...

Take 5 Spotlight

Get to Know the People Behind SMART Recovery

We’re always looking for ways to build and improve our relationship with you, our treasured volunteers. We’ve done a few things along those lines over the years that have helped, but this time we’ve decided to make it simple and quick by having team members answer a few questions (5, to be exact) about what they do. Maybe more importantly, why they do it. Read more about the Take 5 initiative.

Mike Hooper

Nobody gets to recovery from a good place, and Mike Hooper was no exception. “I reached out to the VA crisis line because my addiction to alcohol had reached a point of total destruction of my life.” Hooper, a veteran who is now SMART’s Ohio Outreach Director, says he hadn’t connected with any type of recovery program and felt like he was out of options and headed for more trouble. Then he unexpectedly found SMART Recovery.
