Subject: VolunteerCONNECTION - April 2025

Dear SMART Volunteers,

As spring breathes new life into the world around us, it feels fitting that this month we celebrate the heart of our organization—you.

To everyone who joined us at the SMART Recovery Conference, thank you. Meeting so many of you in person was nothing short of inspiring. Whether we chatted between sessions or exchanged a warm smile in the hallway, every encounter was a reminder of the incredible compassion, wisdom, and dedication that drives this community forward.

In honor of Volunteer Month, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of your impact.

Together, our 1,390 volunteer facilitators support 1,430 public meetings each week. With each meeting averaging 90 minutes, that adds up to more than 2,100 volunteer hours every single week. And if we consider the national value of a volunteer hour—$33.49—that means your time translates to over $71,000 in weekly value, or nearly $3.74 million annually.

But of course, your impact can’t truly be measured in dollars. It’s measured in the stories of recovery, the breakthroughs, the support you offer during the hardest days, and the spaces you hold with care and integrity. You are the pulse of this program, and your contributions change lives every day.

As we close out Volunteer Month, I hope you take a moment to reflect on the incredible difference you make. Whether you’ve been with SMART for years or just a few weeks, your time, your presence, and your belief in the power of change have an impact that ripples far beyond any single meeting.

Thank you for showing up—for others and for yourself. The work you do matters. And we see you.

With gratitude,

Senior Director of Program Delivery

Reflections from the Heart: What Inspires SMART Volunteers

Throughout Volunteer Month, we invited our volunteer community to reflect on what inspires their service—and what they’ve experienced along the way. While we received a small number of responses, each one was rich with honesty, hope, and heart.

Here are just a few themes that emerged:

💡 “I get more out of it than I give.”

💡 “So many people come into my meeting downtrodden and leave with a glimmer of hope.”

💡 “Connection is key. It helped me see I wasn’t alone.”

Facilitators spoke about how empowerment takes root in small but powerful ways—from watching regular participants support one another, to seeing newcomers begin to use SMART tools in their daily lives. Several also took time to recognize fellow volunteers whose consistency, compassion, and encouragement made a lasting impact.

Thank you to everyone who shared your thoughts. These reflections will continue to inform how we celebrate, support, and uplift volunteers throughout the year.

Expanding SMART Recovery en Español

At SMART Recovery, we believe that recovery resources should be accessible to everyone, no matter what language they speak.

We’re excited to share that we are currently working to translate the new 4-Point Program Handbook into Spanish, making it easier for Spanish-speaking participants and communities to access SMART’s life-changing tools.

And this is just the beginning!

Over the coming months, we will also begin translating:

  • The Family & Friends Handbook

  • The Facilitator Manual

  • The Family & Friends Facilitator Manual

In addition to new printed materials, we are working toward integrating more Spanish-language content across SMART’s website, online Shop, and social media channels, helping us create a more inclusive and welcoming experience for all who seek support.

Thank you for being part of a community that believes recovery should be within reach for everyone, everywhere.
