 Recognizing our Volunteers

During our 30th Anniversary Conference in Salt Lake City, we celebrated our volunteers for their years of service to SMART and our participants. The image below includes the names of those who consented to having their names listed on our Wall of Gratitude at the conference. We know that there are many more who dedicate their time to helping others live a Life Beyond Addiction. The SMART National Office Team and Board of Directors would like to thank each of you for choosing to dedicate your volunteer time to SMART Recovery. We are lucky to have so many dedicated, passionate, and skilled volunteers.

When paying tribute to the volunteers who have been with SMART for 30+ years, the following picture from back then was brought up on screen at the conference. Do you recognize any familiar faces?

The following awards were granted at the conference:

The Joseph Gerstein Award for Exemplary Service to SMART Recovery recognizes individuals who have made significant, consistent, and durable contributions to the SMART Recovery community. The two recipients of this award this year were:

  • Charles True

  • Michael John

The SMART Empowerment for All Award, launched at this year's conference, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to, and tangible progress toward, increasing the availability and accessibility of SMART Recovery in diverse and underserved communities. Th recipients of this award this year are:

  • Diane Vines

  • Gerardo (Geee) Matamoros

Finally, the SMART Science Award, started in 2018, recognizes scientists researching the efficacy of SMART and mutual aid groups that use a self-empowering model to address addictive problems. This year's award was presented to:

  • Dr. Alison Beck of the University of Wollongong, Australia.

Congratulations to all these wonderful individuals for their hard work and dedication to self-empowered recovery!

Supporting Volunteer Training Scholarships

Building in the 30th anniversary celebration of our volunteers that we began at the conference, we'll be raising funds in the second half of April specifically to support additional scholarships to add new individuals to our volunteer ranks for the next 30 years. Having trained facilitators lead meetings is something that sets SMART apart from other pathways.

Please help us spread SMART Recovery to more who need it by donating in support of Volunteer Training Scholarships between now and April 30th. Your contribution makes a significant impact in helping future facilitators to empower those in recovery live a Life Beyond Addiction.

Thank you for your support!

Please update your Donation Links

As part of our continuing efforts to streamline processes and improve user experiences, we ask that, when asking for donations from participants, you use the "Support This Meeting" option on SMARTfinder, or https://www.smartrecovery.org/donate. Updating your link now will help to alleviate any problems as we update some of our forms. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to us at volunteerhq@smartrecovery.org.

Submit Your Group Donations
to SMART Recovery

Your group donations to SMART Recovery help empower millions worldwide with tools to recover from any problematic addictive behavior. After you've covered any local rent or supply expenses, please send the surplus to the National Office. These funds are important to our ongoing support of meetings and volunteers nationally.
