Change in Operational Leadership

Dear SMART Recovery Community,

I am writing today with an update on SMART Recovery’s leadership. Seeking improved work-life balance and a position better aligned with her strengths, Christi Alicea asked to return to her former role as assistant executive director. At the same time, Pete Rubinas, who had been in that role, expressed his willingness and interest to serve as executive director. The Board of Directors approved their request to swap positions, making Pete the acting executive director and Christi the assistant executive director. This change takes effect on December 1, 2022.

Pete brings impressive qualifications to this leadership position. His experience includes ten years in the nonprofit education field as executive director of Willow Oak Montessori school and another ten in the business world as a high-quality audit and consulting professional at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He knows SMART well as a participant, trained facilitator, and regional coordinator for North Carolina.

Pete and Christi have worked closely over the past six months during a time of transition for the staff and board. Both believe this new working relationship represents the best alignment of their respective skills. They are eager to continue to work with the rest of the National Office team to help SMART Recovery thrive.

After a decade of extremely fast meeting growth that stretched our small staff, followed by the disruptive impact of the pandemic, we are making long-needed organizational and cultural changes. Our business model is changing to support more meetings, volunteers, training, and resources with significant increases in grant and recurring revenue that requires careful management. We continue to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion while embracing change and sustained growth.

Our board is evolving from an operating to a governance model focusing on strategy and policy. We are updating our committee structure, bylaws, and policies accordingly with the help of consultants with expertise in nonprofits.

Much work has been done to improve our organization since Christi stepped into the acting executive director role in June. Much work remains. We are confident our work today will lead to long-term strength and stability for this critical organization in a world that needs the empowering support we offer to one another and all those struggling with addictive behaviors.

Please join us in welcoming Pete into his new role and thanking Christi for her service over the past six months.

Sincerely,

Bill Greer, President

SMART Recovery USA Board of Directors
