We are officially in the fall season. And fall is a time of change. The weather is shifting with cooler mornings and evenings, daylight is shifting where daylight is shortening, leaves are turning, schedules changed with back-to-school, and back to being in the office as more companies are requiring it. In the Pacific Northwest, it means more rain. 

While change is normal and inevitable, our brains are wired to favor familiarity and predictability, as these provide a sense of security.  Let's face it, we are in stressful times in our world today.

This works similarly for our pets. Change can add stress triggers for them. 

Pets show stress in subtle ways: clinginess, pacing, vocalizing, or even litter box changes. Their nervous systems are deeply tuned to ours, so when routines wobble, and we feel stress, they mirror the tension. 

Bottom line, when we're stressed, we are creating stress for our pets.  And it's important for us to manage our stress healthily. Being in this community, you will have heard me stress grounding. It is a requirement (a fundamental step that brings us to the present) for good stress management that helps you and your pets.

Creating consistent rhythms—meals, walks, snuggle time—helps them feel secure. Energy balancing and calm presence allow their bodies to co-regulate with us, shifting them back into ease.

This week's tip is helping us get back to the present moment in a way I haven't discussed before.

5 Senses Scavenger Hunt:

Playfully engage your senses to bring yourself back into the present moment:

  1. Look – Find 5 things you can see (bonus: name something in your favorite color).
  2. Touch – Notice 4 things you can feel (your clothes, a chair, your pet’s fur).
  3. Listen – Identify 3 things you can hear (birds, traffic, your breath).
  4. Smell – Notice 2 scents around you (coffee, fresh air, flowers, freshly baked bread or cookies, or even smell your pet).
  5. Taste – Focus on 1 thing you can taste (a sip of water, a mint).
After doing this, you will feel calmer as you realize your present moment is safe. (unless you are in a real emergency, this will help you focus)
