It's officially Summer!

June has been a good month. I celebrated my birthday with friends and family. Monday is my outdoor rock-climbing adventure with my climbing buddies who also have birthdays this month. We started that tradition last year.

And it's nice having the extra daylight this time of year.  I hope you and your pets are enjoying time together.

We are nearing the 4th of July holiday where fireworks happen. Some people like the fireworks; however, most animals don't. The loud booming noises experience can wreak havoc with your furry friends.

See below in Exercise for the Week, tips to help your pets feel more comfortable during the fireworks.

Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe During the Fireworks

• Start now to desensitize your pets before the fireworks. Play recordings of fireworks and let them get used to the noise. Start more softly, then bump up the volume gradually to help them get used to the sound of fireworks. I've had clients tell me they put on old Western movies with gunshots to help desensitize their pets a few weeks before the 4th.

• Keep your pets inside during the time of the fireworks. It will help them feel safer. It will protect their ears from the noise. Also, it prevents them from getting spooked and running off. The 4th of July is the day most pets go missing in the US.

• Exercise your pets (walk your dogs, play with your cats) during the day before the nighttime fireworks begin. And stay home with them during the fireworks. Even if they prefer to hide, they will feel comforted with you nearby.

• It's important for you to stay calm during the fireworks so they can feel safer knowing you aren't worried or concerned. Some dogs feel safer with a Thunder shirt. Some cats like a box in a dark corner covered in a blanket. Listen to your pet where they want to be during the fireworks. They know where they feel safe. Also provide soft music or white noise to help buffer the fireworks noise.
