Oxford Open Doors

This weekend marks the annual Open Doors festival in Oxford, organised by the Oxford Preservation Trust. The Old Library at St Mary’s will be open to the public on Saturday from 10am - 5pm, and this year will feature an exhibition about John Henry Newman, who was the Vicar from 1828-1843. The exhibition has been created in partnership with the National Institute for Newman Studies at Duquesne University. Professor Ken Parker and his colleagues have drawn together contributions from an international team of scholars, and the exhibition tells the story of Newman and his path to sainthood. The exhibition will also be available in the De Brome Chapel during the months of September and October.

Over the weekend, Holywell Cemetery, one of the city’s best-kept secrets, will also be open for tours. It offers a rich habitat for wildlife in the midst of the city centre, and is also an oasis of calm and tranquillity in a city which is often frantic in its pace and momentum. It is just by St Cross Church, which is now the Historic Collections Centre for Balliol College. Choral Evensong will take place here at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon. It will be followed by refreshments at Holywell Manor, at the kind invitation of Tom and Karen Melham. Please do come and join us.

Open Doors: 14-15 September 2019

Every year, the University Church participates in the Open Doors Weekend, organised by the Oxford Preservation Trust.  The theme this year is 'Made in Oxford' and alongside many other historical venues, we celebrate our city and its people.

On Saturday, we will open the Old Library to the public, from 9.30am - 5pm. Dating back to the fourteenth century, the Old Library is the first library of the University, and though the chained books are long gone you can still enjoy its beautiful golden boss ceiling.

The Old Library will also host an exhibition on the life and work of John Henry Newman, former Vicar of the University Church, who will be canonised this year. The exhibition will then move to the Adam de Brome chapel and will be up until Monday 28 October.

Throughout the weekend, you can enjoy a self-guided tour of the church using one of our Highlights leaflets.
Ride & Stride

The annual RIDE AND STRIDE event in aid of Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust, will take place on Saturday 14th. September. If you would like to take part, either cycling or walking to as many churches as you wish, please ask Margaret Chaundy for a sponsor form.
St Cross Evensong: Sunday 15 September

The ancient church of St Cross on St Cross Road is one of the parish churches that forms part of the Benefice. The building was closed for regular worship in 2008. It is used now by Balliol College for its Historic Collections. Each year on the Sunday closest to Holy Cross Day we have Choral Evensong at St Cross Church at 3.30pm. It’s an occasion when we mark the Open Doors Weekend with the Friends of Holywell Cemetery. The service will be followed by a reception at Holywell Manor. Please do come and join us.
