Saying Goodbye

We can all, I expect, recall major ‘goodbye’ moments of our lives. There may be ones that were painful and unwanted, and others that were full of hope and expectation despite all we left behind. As I move on to new pastures this week, I know there are faces and voices, laughs and smiles, that I will miss dearly. There are routines and rhythms, places and spaces, that will no longer be there.

I have much to say thank you for to all at St Mary’s, for your welcome and support, your inspiration and challenge, over the past two years. There have been highs aplenty – the raucous laughter and irreverence at Mardi Gras evenings, the raw honesty of student discussion dinners, the 12-foot rainbow Jesus strolling down Cornmarket Street for Oxford Pride, the glory of the Advent and Christmas Carol Services. At low moments, I have always been thankful for the support and kindness of colleagues, parishioners and friends, to help me see my way through and grow.

St Mary’s has so much to offer the modern world – in its ability and enthusiasm to think anew about faith in ways that meet the challenges and insights of contemporary life, in its artistic and active life that seeks to build a more imaginative and hopeful world, and in the warmth of its community and welcome. These are gifts I will cherish as I leave, and that I hope and pray I take with me and will hold on to.

Open Doors: 14-15 September 2019

Every year, the University Church participates in the Open Doors Weekend, organised by the Oxford Preservation Trust.  The theme this year is 'Made in Oxford' and alongside many other historical venues, we celebrate our city and its people.

On Saturday, we will open the Old Library to the public, from 9.30am - 5pm. Dating back to the fourteenth century, the Old Library is the first library of the University, and though the chained books are long gone you can still enjoy its beautiful golden boss ceiling.

The Old Library will also host an exhibition on the life and work of John Henry Newman, former Vicar of the University Church, who will be canonised this year. The exhibition will then move to the Adam de Brome chapel and will be up until Monday 28 October.

Throughout the weekend, you can enjoy a self-guided tour of the church using one of our Highlights leaflets.
Ride & Stride

The annual RIDE AND STRIDE event in aid of Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust, will take place on Saturday 14th. September. If you would like to take part, either cycling or walking to as many churches as you wish, please ask Margaret Chaundy for a sponsor form.
St Cross Evensong: Sunday 15 September

The ancient church of St Cross on St Cross Road is one of the parish churches that forms part of the Benefice. The building was closed for regular worship in 2008. It is used now by Balliol College for its Historic Collections. Each year on the Sunday closest to Holy Cross Day we have Choral Evensong at St Cross Church at 3.30pm. It’s an occasion when we mark the Open Doors Weekend with the Friends of Holywell Cemetery. The service will be followed by a reception at Holywell Manor. Please do come and join us.
Harvest Festival

The Harvest Festival will take place this year on Sunday 22 September. There will be an All-Age Eucharist at 10.30am. We will also be gathering gifts for the Gatehouse, the drop-in centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. Can you help with the following? Bovril, Marmite, Jam, Honey, Chocolate spread, Peanut butter, Salad cream, Mayonnaise, Tomato ketchup, Brown sauce, Tinned ham, Tinned tuna, Teabags, Instant Coffee, Hot chocolate, Cuppasoup, Cake (shop-bought and  sealed), toiletries and sanitary products. You can bring them to the service or to the Church office on Friday 20 September.
Newman Canonisation

John Henry Newman, who was Vicar of St Mary’s from 1828-1843, will be canonised in Rome on Sunday 13th October. Although we are not organising a pilgrimage to Rome for this occasion, tickets are available at www.newmancanonisation.com. Alongside a number of events in Oxford, there will be an ecumenical celebration of Choral Evensong in St Mary’s on Thursday 17th October at 5.30pm. The Most Revd Bernard Longley, Archbishop of Birmingham, will be preaching. Everyone is welcome.
