Digital Fortresses

Mapping the infrastructure of coercion and control

by Nick Buxton, Josephine Solanki and TITiPI collective

Digital technologies are expanding the reach of state violence, surveillance and repression, connecting borders, policing and militarisation through an increasingly interconnected infrastructure of control.

In March 2026, TNI and TITIPI brought together 30 activists, researchers and organisers in Amsterdam to map this infrastructure, identify connections across different struggles, and strengthen collective resistance.

Rethinking Green Industrial Policy in ASEAN

Regionalism in the global dis-order

by Hadi Rahmat Purnama, Nur Firdaus, Pihri Buhaerah, Rachmi Hertanti, Rizky Banyualam and Salsabila Aziziah

This briefing provides a preliminary contribution to conceptualising a new approach to GIP for economic structural transformation in the Global South, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia. It explores the kinds of industrial policy strategies needed to promote development pathways that are just, accountable, inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The briefing also seeks to support researchers and activists across Southeast Asia in reconceptualising green industrial policy and advancing a more compelling narrative for new structural transformation grounded in social justice and democratic aspirations.

Architectures of the People

Putting economic and climate justice at the center of the construction sector’s future

by Luam Kidane

The deepening climate crisis is intimately linked to how we build our urban and rural communities. Coordinated public policy strategies that justly and sustainably address the built environment should engage simultaneously with architecture, planning, education, climate mitigation and adaptation, the solidarity economy and financing.

Orlando Letelier – History and memory

by Denis Burke

TNI's second director, Orlando Letelier, was assassinated in Washington DC on 21 September 1976. Fifty years later, the political significance of that crime remains undiminished. So too, perhaps more surprisingly, does the personal loss.

The military elephant in the climate room

by Nick Buxton

Two global news events have dominated the summer of 2026: the US-Israeli war on Iran and intense heatwaves in Europe and the eastern United States. They are rarely connected in news coverage, but the mother fearing for her family’s life under bombardment in Tehran is connected to the grandmother in a poor Parisian apartment block suffering at night from a heatwave with no way to cool herself, as well as the farmer in Sri Lanka unable to pay for the pesticides for their crops as a result of the closure of the strait of Hormuz. The thread that ties them together is a global fossil fuel economy that is deeply embedded in a war economy, which together are destabilising our planet’s climate.

Help end investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS)

The Handel Anders! coalition is calling on governments to put an end to Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), a mechanism that allows foreign investors to sue states over measures that may affect their investments.

The coalition has launched a petition urging governments to withdraw from existing ISDS agreements and reject new ones.

TNI supports efforts to end ISDS and encourages readers to learn more about the issue and sign the petition.

Revolution and Development in Sudan

The Collected Works of Muzan Alneel

A Monumental Voice for a People-Centered Revolution

Muzan Alneel—a TNI fellow, engineer, revolutionary, and organic intellectual—was a pulse of Sudan’s historic December 2018 uprising and its voice to the world. This posthumous collection charts her urgent vision for a people-centred transformation. Combining activist theory and on-the-ground praxis, Muzan dissects the class struggles and grassroots organizing of the Resistance Committees, provides a clear-eyed critique of counter-revolutionary forces, and outlines a bold framework for sustainable, democratic industrial policy.

I Rise in Fire

Jamil Al-Amin, aka H. Rap Brown, and the Long Revolution

by Arun Kundnani

I Rise in Fire tells the remarkable story of Jamil Al-Amin, formerly H. Rap Brown, a largely forgotten leader of the Black Power movement. Drawing on declassified FBI files and exclusive interviews, the book examines his revolutionary politics, state repression and the enduring struggle for freedom and justice.
