| This morning on Facebook I received a message from a Hungarian pastor who ministers to Roma in Serbia. We had met a couple years ago at a conference and he was writing to tell me that his son had returned from Bible school and was interested in helping with Bible translation for the Roma in his area: "He is ready to help; I, too, am ready." We are grateful for this interest in Bible translation among the Roma in central and eastern Europe.
Currently, we are translating 50 key Bible stories from Genesis to Revelation. These are simplified, rewordings of the biblical text with pictures. We have the first draft of these stories in 5 languages (3 Roma dialects and 2 national languages). We've started translation of the Gospel of Mark in 2 of these Roma dialects, and we have a draft of the whole New Testament in the 3rd Roma dialect, and hope to begin working on editing those drafts soon. We need about $1,800 per month to employ 4 Roma believers to do these Bible translations. | | We are also partnering with Wycliffe Associates to prepare a number of resources that will make it possible for the Bible to be translated not only into Roma (Gypsy) languages, but to any other language in the world which still lacks a Bible. This involves the writing and testing of computer software for translating the Bible and checking those translations, as well as the Greek and Hebrew tools behind them to make sure the translations are accurate. For this, I am helping in the development of a Greek New Testament, a Greek dictionary and a Greek grammar. We are also writing a Study Bible and a Bible commentary which can be translated into any language of the world, since so many languages still lack these very basic Bible study tools.
