The Prices Write (April 2016, part 1)
Dear praying friends,
Pam has recently enjoyed teaching the 1st-5th
graders at Danube International Church (her class is pictured above), Daniel
enjoyed celebrating his 8th birthday (pictured below) and Ariela has
enjoyed play time in the park near our house (pictured below).
We are so excited that the booklet with five stories from
the Gospel of Luke has been finished in the Hungarian Muntean Bayash dialect, a
language spoken by 3,000 Roma in southern Hungary. We are waiting to get 500
copies from the printer. One of our Roma partners made the first draft
translation of 37 Bible stories in the Slavic Ardilean Bayash dialect, a
language spoken by 150,000 Roma in Croatia and Serbia. He is the one who had
also done the first draft of the entire New Testament in that language several
years ago. Currently our teammate, Joy, is formatting those stories and the New
Testament translation to go into our app, translationStudio.
Next begins the process of checking
the translations for accuracy: 1) Translate the same stories into Croatian; 2)
Put these stories and a Croatian Bible translation into the computer app; 3)
Have the Roma checkers compare the Roma translation of the stories to make sure
the Roma versions are accurate; 4) Teach these Roma checkers the theory and
practice of Bible translation by (a) translating a training course on Bible
translation into Croatian, and (b) walking them through the technicalities of
the process of checking the NT to make sure that the Roma translation is accurate
and that it will clearly and naturally communicate God’s Word to those who
speak that language.
Another exciting development for me
is working on producing a copyright-free Greek New Testament and Greek lexicon
(dictionary) to help the translators check their translations with the original
language of the New Testament. As part of this process, I will be traveling to
Orlando for meetings the last week of April with unfoldingWord at Wycliffe
Associates. These are exciting days to be a part of the Bible translation
movement. Glory be to God and thank you for praying!
