It is election season in Tennessee...
Tennessee is covered with campaign activity. Local, state and federal election activity abounds.
Certainly, 2026 is a big year since Bill "Church Pew" Lee is leaving the office of governor and the race for that office started months ago although it appears that only John Rose, currently Congressman of District 6, has officially declared his candidacy. There are rumors that there will be other candidates but for now those are just rumors.
With Rose announcing he is running for governor, there will be an open seat for the 6th District next year (or sooner if Rose steps down). That races already have several contenders including at least one state legislator and one former member of Congress.
Then, there is the special election for Tennessee's 7th Congressional District since Mark Green suddenly resigned effective in July. A special election is underway with perhaps 20 or so interested parties including several who are currently state legislators.
Of course, these races are generating interest from existing state legislators who are seeking to move into new roles and they are creating potential interest for successors (or appointees) to state legislative offices if one or more of them take a new office before their existing terms are concluded.
TFA's representatives have been to several of these announcement and campaign events already. Since several of the interested contenders are presently members of the Tennessee Legislature, these events present opportunities for individuals to engage on 2nd Amendment issues. Certainly, opportunities exist to video tape and record these "public promise parties" so that campaign promises can be measured against subsequent performance. But, these campaign events might also provide information and insight that is broadly critical to the 2026 primary and general elections for the state legislature.
What are some questions that existing legislators can be asked (and pressed to answered)? Consider these:
- You have been a state legislator for ___ years, how do you define "constitutional carry?"
- You have been a state legislator for ___ years, do you contend that Tennessee presently has real constitutional carry?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years, which pro-2nd Amendment bills have you been the prime sponsor on and did they pass? If they did not pass, which Republican legislators failed to support it?
- You have been a state legislator for ___ years, bills that would create real constitutional carry in Tennessee have been blocked in the Tennessee Legislature for several years. But, with a Republican super majority that does not make sense unless there are a significant number of powerful Republicans who are blocking it. Which Republican Legislators have taken actions to block constitutional carry?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years, bills that would eliminate gun free zones in places like public parks or greenways have been blocked in the
Tennessee Legislature for several years. But, with a Republican super
majority that does not make sense unless there are a significant number
of powerful Republicans who are blocking it. Which Republican
Legislators have taken actions to block bills to eliminate this and other gun free zones?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years, bills that would have allowed the voters to amend the state constitution to eliminate language that is now moot because of the Supreme Court's McDonald decision. That bill was killed in 2024 and did not move forward any quicker in 2025. With a Republican super
majority that does not make sense unless there are a significant number
of powerful Republicans who are blocking it. Which Republican
Legislators have taken actions to block the right of the citizens to vote on a constitutional amendment?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years and each year employees of the Department of Safety and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation testify in committees against the expansion of rights protected by the Second Amendment. With a Republican super
majority that does not make sense that taxpayer funded bureaucrats are infringing our constitutionally protected rights. What have you done to stop or discourage these taxpayer funded agency witnesses from testifying on topics directly against my constitutionally protected rights?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years, have you filed any bills or supported with recorded votes any bills that would let me defend my home, business, and property with deadly force if necessary?
- You
have been a state legislator for ___ years, identify the legislation that you carried as the prime sponsor that directly advanced my rights under the Second Amendment?
Consider taking this list and sharing it with others. Do your best to get answers (particularly recorded or on video) to these and similar questions. Post the responses on social media and spread the word so that the voters will know specifically which state legislators are truthfully strong Second Amendment supporters and which are covering up for the "team players" who are not. |
