Legislative Calendar - Week of  April 18, 2022

The Legislature is clearly winding down after ignoring most of the strong 2nd Amendment bills this year.  They have knowingly and intentionally killed the REAL Constitutional Carry legislation for 2022.  That Legislation was continuously opposed by Bill Lee's administration - evidence of another broken promise by Governor Lee to be detailed soon by TFA in a press release.

However, there are there are several bills set to be heard during the week of April 18.  All of these bills are listed in the attached PDF.

Here is what we are asking you to do:

1) Call your House and Senate members.  Ask them to SUPPORT bills that we support.  Some of these bills are highlighted in this message and others are listed in the attached PDF.  To do that they should a) tell the bill sponsors that they want the legislation passed and b) sign on as co-sponsors.  Follow up with phone calls every day or so to make sure they do it.

If it is a bill we are recommending to OPPOSE - call your members and insist that they contact both the sponsors and the committee members to demand that the bill be stopped.   If you don't know who your legislators are, you can look it up on the state website.  Email addresses for committee members are included in the attached PDF.

2) Contact by phone and email the members of the committee which are to hear these bills.  You don't have to leave a long message or debate with them.  Simply state that you are a concerned Tennessee citizen and TFA member.  Tell them you SUPPORT (and want the bill passed into law) or you OPPOSE (and want the bill killed).   Keep track of who you talk to and what their responses were.

3) Go to the TFA Facebook page and share not only your efforts but also the responses you received.  Let's support those legislators who do the right things and lets REPLACE and EXPOSE the ones who do not.

SUPPORT:

Nothing - nothing to support that still has a chance to pass.

OPPOSE:

HB2850 by Rep. Kumar is set for Tuesday in the House Finance Committee at 10:00am.  This bill proposes to spend millions of taxpayer funds each year to give "vouchers" which the public can use to take handgun training courses from instructors who are approved by the Tennessee Department of Safety to teach the civilian handgun course.  This bill may be nothing more than "corporate welfare" for those instructors who have lost some business because of the passage of the governor's permitless carry law (the disaster that it is) in 2021.   TFA opposes using taxpayer funds to provide corporate welfare or training to others in a matter that should be an issue of personal accountability.  Please call committee members and co-sponsors (listed in the PDF) and urge them to kill this poorly designed legislation.

SB2149 by Senator Massey is the senate version of Rep. Kumar's bill.  The senate version is equally bad.  It is set for Tuesday in Senate Finance Ways and Means at 2:30 p.m.  TFA opposes using taxpayer funds to provide corporate welfare or training to others in a matter that should be an issue of personal accountability.  Please call committee members and co-sponsors (listed in the PDF) and urge them to kill this poorly designed legislation.

SB2752 by Sen. Akbari seeks is set for Tuesday in Senate Finance Ways and Means at 2:30 p.m.  It seeks to classify "firearm violence" as a public health issue and seeks to require the health department to track data relevant to firearms use.
