Plant a Seed, Read!

Welcome back, summer readers!

Hopefully you're all enjoying the first week of summer reading 😎 I checked in on registration the first day, and we had around 150 readers. Today, that's up to 192! We're well ahead of 2025, which opened with 147 readers.

Plus, we're already up to 119 books. That's blooming awesome! 🌸 And I'm glad to see almost everyone using the new 5-star rating feature; it was one of our most requested improvements.

Head over to read.berlinpeck.org to register and log your books. Happy reading!

Plant a Seed, Read

This year's theme is "Plant a Seed, Read," featuring artwork from illustrator Sarah Ferone. This theme inspired our seven reading teams as well as this year's team progress board. I'll have to work on my plant-based puns... if you have any good ones, click that "reply" button!

Featured Review

Every year, we get feedback from summer readers who want to see reviews—some even want to make them mandatory! 😱 We're not in the business of assigning book reviews, but we do want to reward the readers who take the time and effort to share their thoughts. So this year, the newsletter will feature a weekly review from one of our readers. If we pick your review, you’ll win a voucher for a free small prize!

Without further ado, here is our FIRST featured review...

A Gentleman and a Thief by Dean Jobb

Review by equintana ★★★★☆

A Gentleman and a Thief by Dean Jobb was a captivating nonfiction. Jobb's engaging storytelling made this true crime story feel as suspenseful as a novel. The historical details were fascinating without ever feeling overwhelming, and the narrative moved at a great pace. A fantastic choice for readers who enjoy history, true crime, and nonfiction that reads like fiction.

Rules Reminder

We haven’t seen major problems with rule-following this summer... just a lot of enthusiastic reading! Many of the top readers you see on the leaderboard each year are (unsurprisingly) very active library users who regularly check out stacks of books. But to keep things clear, here’s a quick refresher on the guidelines:

  • You must have started reading the book ON or AFTER June 22.

  • The book must be a book, ebook, audiobook, or graphic novel.

  • The book must be at your general reading level.

If we find that a participant is not following the program rules, we will send one reminder before disqualifying the questionable books—or their entire account.

For all of you who are following the rules diligently... first of all, thank you! Please keep in mind that disqualified books/accounts will still show up on the website, but will not be eligible for prizes. We're keeping an eye on things behind the scenes.

Leaderboards

pearlmsqueaks is firmly planted in first place with 13 books. ctaylor is growing strong in second with 7 books, while TheRantingGnome branches into third with 6 books. szy09 is in fourth with 4 books. Close behind, we have a nine-way tie with 3 books each, ready to sprout up the leaderboard!

The teams are off and racing down the garden track! The Pear Posse leads the field with 26 books, just ahead of the Pepper Patch at 25 books in a neck-and-neck race. The Bee Society buzzes into third with 20, followed by the Apple Alliance in fourth with 18. Further back, the Butterfly Collective flutters along with 11, while the Ladybug League and the Beet Syndicate are tied at 8 books.
