Subject: 🌞 Adult Summer Reading Week 4

Week 4 of Summer Reading!

It's the second week of summer reading, and we have 246 adult summer readers, with an impressive 930 books finished. How are we close to a thousand books already?!

If you haven't signed up for this year's program, click here to get started. Questions? Concerns? Can't remember your account login info? Give us a call at 860-828-7126.

Prizes, prizes, prizes!

Congratulations to Sarah, our first raffle winner... proof that every book counts! With just 2 tickets, she's the winner of the Safari Mini-Golf raffle. More raffles are coming, so keep reading!

Speaking of prizes... your team bookmarks are hot off the presses! Every single team has passed 100 books, earning their special bookmark prize. Visit the Adult Reference Desk to pick up yours (and say hi!) We can also include them with your curbside pickup books.

Get Your Game On!

Did you know the library has a collection of lawn games to borrow? Liven up your next outdoor party with a bocce set, cornhole, croquet, pickleball, ring toss, spikeball, tumbling timbers (think extra large Jenga), or yard dice. Our Library of Things includes other outdoor fun, like hiking equipment, binoculars, and a metal detector.

Yard games are in high demand during the summer, so I recommend placing a hold by calling 860-828-7125 during library hours.

Looking for something a little cooler in this heatwave? I think board games are pretty cool! We have games that are geared towards both adults and children (and many children's games are fun for adults, too).

Board games are more than just fun—they promote literacy, encourage critical thinking skills, inspire empathy, and provide a fun interactive experience for friends and family. I recommend browsing the whole collection, but here are a few of my personal favorites...

  • 🕵️ Codenames: an easy-to-learn party game that challenges you to guess your team's words while avoiding your opponent's words.

  • 🚂 Ticket to Ride: a classic tabletop game that involves building train routes across the country—the best part is blocking your friends from building their own routes!

  • 😺 Exploding Kittens: a hilarious tongue-in-cheek card game where you must defuse exploding kittens using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. No kittens were harmed in the making of this game!

  • 🏔️ Dominion: a classic "deck builder" game where the cards you choose can earn you victory points, let your perform special actions, attack other players, or tweak the game's rules.

  • 😲 Cards Against Humanity Family Edition: a family-friendly version of its wildly popular (and notoriously risqué) predecessor. Players take turns choosing the best (funniest!) answer to each fill-in-the-blank question card.

Just one little disclaimer about the library's games... Although this year's summer reading theme is all about games, you can't actually count them towards your reading total. We love new ways of promoting literacy and empathy, but summer reading is summer reading!

Team Progress

The Book Worms are in the lead with 185 books, but The Hidden Gems aren’t far behind at 136, proving they’re not so hidden after all. The Underliners are close on their heels with 133, while The Literary Legends and The Book Besties are tied at 120. Just a page behind, The Cliffhangers and The Reading Rangers are neck and neck at 118.

Every single team has earned their team bookmarks! The Book Worms are past the 150 mark, earning their team pin—and other teams aren't far behind. We'll let you know when the pins are ready!

Forgot your team name? Check the team page! New participants are given a team on Thursdays, so if you don't see your username, check back next week.
